Job summary:


This role sits within Data Acquisition & Exchange (DA&E) who are part of Data Sharing & Acquisition (DSaA) in CDIO's Chief Data Office.


We are HMRC's central office for obtaining bulk third party information, using statutory powers working with internal collaborators to obtain bulk third-party information for data led compliance work and wider use across HMRC.

This is also the central office for Automatic Exchange of Information with offshore tax authorities under a variety of treaties and international agreements.

DA&E also provide the governance for bulk third party information.


The role provides critical support to HMRC's Data quality systems - providing insight and scale to potential issues through profiling and assessing data quality and defining relevant business rules and metrics.

In addition, it will support business colleagues, their data teams, and projects to test and validate data quality.


Job description:

This is a high profile and exciting role. We work closely with Internal Stakeholders and External Third parties to bring data into HMRC. The data is used to ensure the right Tax is paid by the right people at the right time.


As Data Quality Specialist you will be at the heart of collaboration across four teams, all working with our current systems towards the same goal.

You will also be instrumental in the building of new IT systems, to enable us to deal with the increasing volumes of data.

Person specification:


  • Handle multiple data formats of large & complex type, identify risks/issues and use objectorientated programming language to resolve.
  • Have the ability to work with internal and external customers professionally, communicating in a positive and convincing way, overcoming difficulties, and sharing ideas and best practice with colleagues.
  • Work to standard practices, ensuring continuous improvement and high standards are maintained, whilst ensuring there is a robust process to agree and prioritise acquisitions.
  • Provide support and advice to internal stakeholders concerning Data Acquisition processes/systems across a variety of acquisition routes.
  • Represent Data Acquisition at Data Acquisition Steering Group / Data Acquisition Approval Group meetings.
  • Report to the Data Acquisition Lead promoting the work of the Data Acquisition Team and supporting the work of the wider Data Acquisition & Exchange.
  • Drive and imbed a data quality management cycle, while supporting timely data loading of bulk information from across different sources via different routes including SAS and it's programming language.
  • Be able to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders inside and outside of the organisation through various mediums with confidence.

Essential Criteria:


  • Experience and familiarity of objectoriented programming language, such as C#
  • Experience of data handling, data security, data transformation & familiarity with multiple data formats of large & complex type.

Desirable Criteria:


  • Knowledge of riskbased decisions, demonstrated via evidence of working in an operational compliance and/or riskbased environment.
