Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS at Risk staff throughout Devon who is able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.


Key Dimensions:


  • To be aware of the patients' physical, emotional and social needs and to report accurately to the midwife.
  • To establish good relationships with the patients, relatives and colleagues ensuring accurate and effective communication at all times.
  • To be able to self-manage and organize own day to day tasks and activities against care delivery plans. Under the direction of the midwife, be able to adjust plans in response to service needs.
  • To demonstrate independent inquiry, through knowledge and experience within remit of role.
  • To undertake clinical skills as directed by the midwife and report findings accordingly.
  • To maintain accurate and legible records as appropriate under the direction of the midwife.
  • To contribute to the maintenance of a safe working environment.


The Community Midwifery service is made up of 5 teams consisting of both Midwives and Maternity Support Workers providing care for women in their local area.


Each team is based in one of the locality children's centres or community clinics and is focused on a designated geographical area.

PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • To assist with the preparation and organisation of a range of antenatal/postnatal and specialist clinics.
  • To arrange appointments, ultrasound scans, investigations and obtain laboratory results.
  • To provide specific clinical care tasks (obtain urine samples, urinalysis, obtain microbiological specimens).
  • To promote good hand hygiene and minimise the spread of infection. Take personal responsibility and accountability for own infection prevention and control practice.
  • To support and observe the woman and baby through the ante/post natal and intrapartum period, reporting to the midwife any changes or information concerning the wellbeing of the woman and/or baby.

To undertake maternal observations including:

temperature, pulse, blood pressure, saturations, weight and urinalysis. Report any deviations from the normal range to the midwife.

  • To take emergency action as necessary to safeguard women and babies, to call emergency services as necessary.
  • To assist with basic baby resuscitation e.g. wrap and dry baby.
  • To provide caring support to mothers and partners and be able to cope with sensitive and emotional circumstances if they occur.
  • To undertake venepuncture clinics as necessary.
  • To inform and promote positive parenting in relation to the transition to parenthood through health education e.g. prevention of SIDS and by working in line with the public health agenda.
  • To undertake home visits both jointly and independently and delivers care in accordance to thecareplan and escalates as appropriate.
  • To transport specimens (including the newborn blood spot screening test) from the community to hospital as required.
  • To actively promote and participate in antenatal parent craft classes.
  • To offer advice and support to vulnerable women/families by signposting them to the appropriate agencies e.g. children centres.
  • To provide practical assistance for the midwives caring for a woman in labour at home/birth centre and act in a supportive capacity for the labouring woman/Partner as necessary e.g clean and maintain birth pool.
  • To be responsible for team equipment hire to women.
  • To perform neonatal observations of bilirubinometer and temperature readings on a low risk baby, reporting any deviations from the normal range.
  • To assist the mother with her chosen method of feeding the baby, including giving advice and information on breast feeding to meet 'baby friendly' standards.
  • To demonstrate the principles of sterilization and safe preparation of artificial milk feeds.
  • To inform and promote positive parenting in relation to the transition to parenthood through health education e.g. prevention of SIDS and by working in line with the public health agenda.
  • To undertake home visits both jointly and independently and delivers care in accordance to the care plan and escalates as appropriate.
  • To transport specimens (including the newborn blood spot screening test) from the community to hospital as required.
  • To actively promote and participate in antenatal parent craft classes.
  • To re-dress simple wounds with dry dressings after assessment by the midwife.
  • To provide basic public health advice e.g. diet, postnatal exercises.
