Job summary:


Her Majesty's Naval Base Clyde (HMNB Clyde) is home to the United Kingdom's Strategic Nuclear Deterrent, Astute Class Attack Submarines, Sandown Class Mine Hunter Vessels and 43 Cdo Royal Marines.

It is an operational support and maintenance base, within the Navy Command TLB and comprises both Faslane and Coulport sites.

HMNB Clyde's primary purpose is to provide engineering and logístical support to the Royal Navy in maintaining Continuous at Sea Deterrent (CASD).

This is achieved by ensuring at least one Vanguard Class submarine is on patrol at sea every day of the year.


RNAD Coulport is responsible for the storage, processing, maintenance and issue of the Trident Weapon System and the ammunitioning of all submarine-embarked tactical weapons.


The purpose of the Assistant Heads Capability (AH Cap) is to manage and lead the following operational delivery areas, Docking, Jetties and Engineering Support to ensure day to day operational capability in support naval base outputs is maintained and to ensure new capabilities are introduced successfully across HMNB Clyde's waterfront.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week


Job description:


The purpose of the AH Caps are, on behalf of the HMNB (HM Naval Base) Clyde Faslane Site Operator (SFS), to be responsible to the Authorisee via SFS for the leadership, oversight and management of outputs from the Docking, Jetties and Engineering Support in support of vessel operations.

Additionally, the AH Caps are responsible for the capability development, introduction and operations of new capabilities delivering an enhanced service to waterfront customers.

The AH Caps oversees the implementation of new capabilities, systems, structures and components and their effect on control of NP, NW, and WiH Authorised Activities ensuring that the Risk from these capabilities and activities are manged such that they are reduced 'As Low as Reasonably Practicable' (ALARP).


The AH Caps discharges this responsibility by:

  • Ensuring that conventional safety and design intent is maintained across all engineering related capabilities including H&S, nonnuclear maintenance status and general operational capability.
  • AH Caps oversee the delivery of current and future capabilities in support of waterfront operations.

This is to ensure the surface ship and submarine capabilities and support infrastructure outputs from HMNB Clyde deliver to ensure the requirements of Navy Command are met in accordance with current and future operational programmes and tasking.


Person specification:

The AH Caps will have demonstrable previous in depth experience in operational delivery in a nuclear safety driven environment.
This should include operational experience of management of nuclear facilities in support of Pressurised Water Reactors.


The AH Caps must have strong organisational skills with the ability to work under pressure with mínimal supervision and a proven history of delivering high quality outcomes to time and cost.
