About the role

BGS is looking for a pro-active and competent administrator with a keen eye for detail and an interest in Information Management, archiving or collections management to fulfil the role of Data Ingestion Officer.

The main purpose of the role is to assist in the ingestion and management of new and existing data deposited to the National Geoscience Data Centre (NGDC).

This is an exciting opportunity for a person with strong administrative skills or experience and an interest in working in collections management to join our small team.

You will report directly to the Accession and Registration Manager and work closely with colleagues in NGDC and the wider BGS community, as well as liaising with external depositors and users of BGS and NGDC data.

Based in the Headquarters of BGS in Keyworth in Nottingham, you will be part of a team to ensure that all data currently held and deposited to the NGDC is findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR).

You will also aid the access to the paper records held in Keyworth with manual handling activities related to removing boxes and records from the archive.

As there is a requirement to regularly access physical materials, there is limited scope to work remotely in this role.

Other key duties/responsibilities will include:

  • The appraisal of new deposits against the preferred list of formats and carrying out data conversation activities
  • The appraisal and validation of legacy data deposits against the Data Value Checklist, including sifting and remove superfluous paper and physically moving boxes around the Records store, reboxing collections as appropriate, and disposing of records not accepted for permanent preservation
  • Performing outreach engagement with partners to promote the ingestion of data into the NGDC both internally and externally
  • Supporting colleagues in Enquiries and the Data Validation Officer in handling enquiries and issues relating to data held in the NGDC.

About you

With 5 GCSEs or 2 A 'levels, including Maths and English (or Intermediate Level 2 Apprentice), you should have work experience in an administrative role, ideally with some cataloguing/collections management experience.

We are looking for people with a proven ability to work both individually and as part of a team, and an interest in information management, archiving or collections management.

The post will involve repetitive tasks such as data entry and requires accuracy and the ability to follow a workflow as well as working with colleagues to problem solve issues as they appear.

Please note - you will be required to have the appropriate level of security screening/vetting required for the role. UKRI reserves the right to run or re-run security clearance as required during your employment.

Please also refer to the additional specific essential and desirable skills criteria for this post and please also ensure that you provide a well-considered covering letter demonstrating why you meet these criteria.
