Kitchen Assistant

Main Responsibilities

Purpose of Role

  • To support and deliver a first class experience for our residents. Assist in the provision of a meal tailored to their needs so they can enjoy a personalised quality of life.
  • Help in providing nutritious, tasty food which meets the individual needs of each resident we care for. Every resident is an individual and should be treated with respect and encouraged to make choices in every aspect of their day, promoting their dignity at all times.
  • We expect that you practice a sound knowledge of food safety and actively partake in the maintaining of our excellent hygiene standards in the kitchen areas and throughout the home in your capacity as assistant. Also to support the cook to enable them to carry out the elements of their role which they have responsibility for.
  • As a colleague we expect you to work with your team to exceed these expectations. Treating those you work with and care for equally and fairly, respecting their views and opinions.
  • We will assist the cook to prepare each dish to our best ability in the line with the menu and our resident's preferences
  • We will ensure food is cooked and stored safely in line with company policy on food safety
  • We will help with the completion of all daily tasks, as written in the kitchen diary
  • We will maintain our knowledge of food safety, allergens and the dietary needs of those in our care
  • We will ensure that the highest possible level of hygiene is maintained in the kitchen and servery areas. Completing tasks as delegated by the cook to ensure this happens. Recording where necessary the information acquired
  • We will be responsible for accurately completing temperature and cleaning records as appropriate
  • We will report for duty on time and be correctly attired for our working day
  • We will play an active part in supporting the cook with the ordering of provisions, by making them aware when we have used the last of an ingredient or notice that stock is running low
  • We will advocate correct service of food and will actively inform staff of how food is to be served, engaging with some positive influence in the presentation standards within the home. When presenting meals ourselves we will always ensure a high standard of presentation and quality
  • We will cater to those with varying dietary requirements, whether for residents preference, their health or for their cultural or spiritual needs. This will normally be at the request of a manager, a nurse or an AP or under the instruction of the cook
  • We will ensure information on the changing dietary needs of our residents is passed on within the team
  • We will share with a manager immediately any concerns that we observe or are aware of that may impact on the health, wellbeing and safeguarding of our residents
  • We will work efficiently and conscientiously to complete all tasks within the agreed timescale
  • We will answer the door and telephone appropriately. Respond accordingly, and pass on messages promptly
  • We will monitor waste to see where reductions in quantity could be made or where more food is needed, and will be responsive to this making the regional catering manager aware
  • We will dispose of waste in line with company policy ensuring it is in the correct areas. Checking for signs of pests and reporting to management if anything of concern is observed
  • We will have the knowledge to be able to work in any kitchen assisting position within the home
  • We will contribute to a culture where doing the right thing for the resident is the focus
  • We will deliver quality, personalised resident interactions at every engagement
  • We will assist in the framework of planned and adhoc social activities by helping with the catering provision for this
  • We will practice maximum integrity in all dealings with resident personal affairs, and avoid abuse of the privileged relationship that exists with our residents
  • We will promote equality for all residents, treating everyone fairly and respecting their views & opinions
  • We will wear our uniform and present ourselves in a professional manner, adhering to standards of policy
  • We will maintain personal standards of hygiene and promote universal precautions to limit cross infection
  • We will ensure that all equipment is clean and well maintained, highlighting concerns if present
  • We will act with integrity and be committed to the rights of our residents, including those of privacy, dignity and independence
  • We will control any unconscious prejudice to anyone we help or work with
  • We will remain focused during any periods of change or uncertainty
  • We will participate in team meetings and continuous improvement with our residents being the focus of our energies
  • We will be selfmotivated and keen to learn, participating in all learning identified
  • We will be an excellent timekeeper and reliable
  • We will maintain professional knowle
