The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) provides access to world-leading, large-scale facilities across a range of physical and life sciences, enabling research, innovation and skills training in these areas.

We have two exciting opportunities within our Central Laser Facility (CLF), one of the world's leading laser user facilities and the national laser facility for the UK.

We are dedicated to supporting the UK and global science and innovation communities.

Withover 45 years of experience as a laser facility, our labs and people provide access to some of the best lasers in the world.


We are now building EPAC - a 10 Hz Petawatt laser facility delivering laser-driven beams of x-rays and particles for insight, innovation, and discovery.

From experimental exploration of extreme quantum electrodynamics through to rapid, high resolution, 3Dx-ray imaging of high-value engineering components.

EPAC will deliver a significant uplift in capacity for academic users and will enable us to open up this novel and exciting technology to industry through a dedicated user programme.

It will be a multi-disciplinary,highly collaborative, hub of expertise - an ecosystem for innovation - working alongside university, security, and industry communities.


About the role


A significant portion of the senior role involves industry engagement and collaborating with industry and university partners to demonstrate the value of laser-driven sources including championing of sector-specific engagement strategies, and commercialisationconsiderations such as IP protection.


About you

We are ideally looking for someone with:
- a completed or close to completion of a PhD or equivalent in a relevant field of expertise (experimental science)
- experience of high power laser experiments and laser-driven particle acceleration, or particle accelerator beam-lines, or x-ray imaging technology
- a record of independent research
- experience in scientific instrument development and design
