The Department of Community Special Care Dentistry is funded by NHS England to deliver special care dentistry to patients who have complex medical conditions, learning disabilities, mental health illnesses, physical mobility difficulties, patients with severe anxiety/phobia's and patients with challenging behaviour.


An exciting opportunity has arisen for the post of Dental Receptionist to work within the Department of Community Special Care Dentistry at our dental clinic based at West Norwood Health Centre in SE27.

We are looking to recruit a highly motivated, flexible and conscientious individual to be part of a busy team.

This post is for 15 hours a week over two days, Tuesdays and Fridays.


You must be able to deal with confidential issues and have experience of working in a similar role within a busy department in a healthcare setting providing a welcoming atmosphere for our patients.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Front desk

  • 1. To welcome patients, book appointments, and maintain accurate records of patient attendance and personal details on the Software of Excellence practice management system.
  • To ensure that desk and waiting areas are maintained in a presentable manner.
  • Ensure that patient's complete appropriate paperwork including PR forms.
  • Inform patients that all treatments are chargeable whether seen by a student or dentist unless exemption is proved and that they provide the necessary certificate to exempt them from payment.
  • To maintain and keep up-to-date dental records and to prepare records for archiving and to update archive database for the clinic.
  • To assist in the maintenance of the filing system of dental records held within the clinic area and to undertake any audits that are required.
  • To book patient transport using the online system
  • To deal with patient, staff and student enquiries clearly, by telephone, in person, promptly, efficiently and politely, resolving local issues. All verbal contact with patients must be logged on the patient's electronic patient record.
  • To liaise with the senior dental clinician to ensure that they are aware of any potential problems within the dental clinic.
  • Report any equipment failure to Head Office and keep and file accurate records of maintenance call outs.
  • To input, update and retrieve data on the Software of Excellence practice management system.
  • To ensure that clinic rosters are fully booked well in advance.
  • To liaise with senior clinician's advising them of the current availability of appointment times, recalls and action required for patients who do not attend (DNA) in line with the local DNA Policy.
  • Take part in clinic meetings and staff training days.
