We have an exciting opportunity for a LAS ST+ in General Surgery available to start ASAP until 1st August 2023 in Morriston Hospital.

At present there are 18 gastrointestinal surgeons serving Swansea Bay University Health Board. The majority of these surgeons have sessions in both Morriston and Singleton Hospitals. The emergency intake takes place on the Morriston site, with most major surgery also undertaken there.


The Department of General Surgery is led by a Clinical Director supported by two Clinical Leads, Head of Nursing and General Managers.

The Department forms part of the Integrated Surgical Services Group, which includes Pancreatic, Bariatric, Oesophageal, Colorectal, Endocrine, Vascular, Urology and Head and Neck Services.


We have close links with Swansea University and other University College partners in South Wales especially in the areas of research & development and multi-professional teaching.


We place great emphasis on continuous professional development and will actively support you in the development and achievement of personal goals.


You will provide a clinical service in conjunction with your colleagues under the direction of a Consultant Surgeon, which will include the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.


Applicants must:


  • Be eligible for full registration with and hold a current licence to practise from the GMC at intended
start date

  • Have evidence of achievement of foundation competences from a UKFPOaffiliated foundation
programme or equivalent, in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice.

Current employment in a UK core surgical training programme which leads to successful
completion of the programme by the advertised post start date.
Successful completion of a UK core surgical training programme, evidenced by a
satisfactory ARCP outcome.
completed Certificate of Readiness to Enter Higher Surgical Training.

You will provide advice to clinicians in hospital and primary care, originating either from telephone calls or ward referrals.

Morriston Hospital offers a comprehensive range of services, including specialist services servingthe local population.

These services are supported by critical care facilities, which include a 28 bed general ITU and HDU, a cardiac ITU and HDU, a plastic surgery ITU and HDU and a full range of high quality diagnostic and therapeutic services.

The hospital component encompasses a Coronary Care Unit, several General Medical specialties, a well-developed Trauma and Orthopaedic service & a range of General Surgical specialties.

At present there are 18 gastrointestinal surgeons serving Swansea site in Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board.

The majority of these surgeons have sessions in both Morriston and Singleton Hospitals but all major surgery and emergency intake occur on the Morriston site.

Swansea provides elective and emergency general surgical services to Swansea and the Neath/Port Talbot area which amounts to a population of around 400,000.

Clinical


You will provide a clinical service in conjunction with your colleagues under the direction of a Consultant Surgeon, which will include the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.


You will be required to contribute to the general surgical inpatients, day cases and out patients, with an appropriate level of consultant supervision according to your level of experience.

You will be expected to be able to undertake simple and routine general surgical procedures independently.

You will be expected to work within existing clinical guidelines in the directorate.
