An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated nurse to join the General Surgery and Urology Education Team here at Lancashire teaching hospitals


The post holder is a specialist lead accountable for their own professional actions, responsible in assisting the clinical ward/teams staff to assess, develop, implement and evaluate patient outcomes through specific education programmes / evidence-based practice.

To co-ordinate /facilitate educational activities for registered and non-registered staff within the General Surgery and Urology team within the Division of Surgery.


The post holder is required to develop and maintain an effective environment for learning within the wards and departments of the General Surgery and Urology through coaching and staff development by a variety of methods and in a variety of settings.


Additionally, the post holder will support with trust wide initiatives, including the recruitment and retention strategies with international and local applicants.

We would consider the secondment at a band 6 position for the appropriate applicant

  • Deliver face to face training to staff, in groups and one to one sessions
  • Provide support to ward and clinic staff, identifying gaps in knowledge and working with individuals towards a competency framework
  • Undertake assessment to confirm that staff have met the required standard of competence
  • Act as a role model for provision of high quality and safe care
  • Must have airway experience as will be required to support ward staff to manage altered airway as well as families and patients on their discharge.


This role will support the delivery of education to our medical nursing team which is paramount in supporting clinical excellence.

  • To undertake educational audits as relevant to the directorate
  • Be a cascade trainer for areas relevant to the job role for example ANTT, BLS, Moving and Handling
  • Work one clinical shift a month to maintain clinical skills.
  • Facilitate and deliver teaching within acute Surgery care topics.
  • Oversee the nurse curriculum and compliance with the RCN & TQUINS frameworks in liaison with the unit manager and interest group leads.
  • To lead in standardisation of processes, equipment and consumables in line with the organisation and the procurement cluster.
  • Maintain overall responsibility for the medical device training and delivery for the unit.
  • Be the lead for the unit on the dynamic system of online competency recording and lead the roll out of this system within the unit.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver education and aid the completion of all staff's essential training including the nursing, AHP, medical and admin staff.
  • Oversee all study and educational opportunities for staff, ensure equity and parity in provision of training.
  • To maintain an up to date register of preregistration mentors for the directorate. Take on the sign off mentor role.
  • To ensure information regarding mentor activity is shared with the Practice Placement Facilitators
  • To ensure mentors attend updates as required by liaising with ward managers and modern matrons to develop strategies to ensure the timely release of staff to attend training.
  • To support development of staff within the Directorate by the direct provision of mentorship and clinical supervision as required
  • Support the wards with the management of the capacity of students within the General surgery and urology
  • Support the wards with the management of the arrival and induction or oversee the induction of students to the surgery unit
  • Support mentors and take the overall lead on any issues identified within the student cohorts.
  • To develop strategies in conjunction with ward managers, modern matrons and HRD to ensure that staff within the Directorate attend:
  • annual mandatory training in line with Trust policy.
