Role Summary
Post, Portering & Transport Services provides a wide range of logistics solutions to the University of Birmingham. We deliver the highest quality customer service through our local and international expertise.

Integral to our success is a strong focus on planning and an ability to meet constant deadlines, complimented by our commitment to reduce our carbon emissions.


The Post holder will be expected to work as part of the Post, Portering and Transport Services Department, supporting in the general day to day duties within Portering Services.

They will be responsible for the efficient, transportation of furniture and equipment around the University including exam, conference and event set-ups.

They must have a flexible attitude to working patterns and be expected to work overtime and weekends. The Post holder will be expected to perform a variety of driving to include; minibuses and other commercial vehicles.


Main Duties

  • You will be required to organise the loading, delivery and collection of office furniture and equipment as agreed with your team leader.
  • To deliver or collect loads on and off campus to any location in the UK.
  • When required, you will be expected to be flexible and use your initiative, prioritising and managing your work in accordance to the needs of the University. This will mean weekend work, early mornings and evenings on occasion.
  • To handle, collect and deliver materials and equipment which may include hazardous chemicals and take the appropriate care in the handling of these.
  • To work as part of a team which undertakes large furniture and equipment moves within the University. This includes setting up furniture for examinations, exhibitions and formal University functions. The duties will involve lifting and moving heavy items and irregular shaped objects.
  • Responsible for managing ever changing workloads across the busy department ensuring priorities are met, this may involve making offsite vehicle assessments, decisions and communicating action plans to colleagues.
  • Be a first point of contact for individuals and departments throughout the day, adopting a positive and calm approach to solving logístical problems. Recognise and resolve customer queries in a positive and professional manner, escalating where necessary.
  • The collecting of confidential waste, ensuring accurate work sheets are maintained. Using computer systems to down load confidential wastes route data.
Driving

  • Drive and operate a diverse and varied fleet, to include, 3.5 tonne, minibuses, commercial vans and cars. This involves petrol, diesel, electric and Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles.
  • Responsible for driving young students from the University School children, visitors and University students, unsupervised, maintaining their safety at all times. There is a high element of lone working and possibly long distances.
  • Confident and competent in driving commercial vehicles within their driving licence specification
