Our clients are always looking for talented people to join them and they currently have an opportunity to join them as a Technical Tax & VAT Accountant.

This role reports to the Finance Manager (Tax & Technical) and its main purpose is to prepare returns to their key stakeholders, provide technical guidance on issues such as VAT, PAYE, gift aid and foreign tax to the finance team and other departments withinthe institute, managing investments and provide systems administration for the site's accounting system and a breakdown of key responsibilities appears below:
Preparing VAT returns

Supervise the VAT return preparation of all subsidiary entities

Reviewing procedures and undertaking analysis to ensure finance services are compliant with HMRC guidance and legislation


Identifying areas of tax risk for the group and managing and implementing plans and procedures to mitigate and minimise the impact of these risks.

Keeping abreast of HMRC changes and advising on the implications and on recommended actions.

Presenting complex and technical information clear to others within the department

Advising other departments on the tax implications of projects and new initiatives

Approval of payments to individuals (Per Diems/Bursaries)

Be the point of contact with HMRC for all matters within the group.

Preparing other UK/US tax returns e.g. corporation tax returns, customs returns, and payroll related returns (PSA and supervision of P11d compiled by HR)

Liaise with and be the point of contact for professional external advisors relating to international tax matters.

Be the point of contact with international tax authorities for all matters relating to international tax within the group.

Provide basic and advanced technical training on VAT/tax to the Finance team.

Administration of financial systems and maintenance of the accuracy and integrity of the data

Working with professional advisors and suppliers to develop the functionality of the financial systems and their interfaces


Supporting the project manager for the upgrade of financial systems, to ensure that they support the Finance department's objectives and VAT/tax reporting requirements.


Payroll duties - supporting the checking performed by Senior Finance Assistant checking prior months to current months per pay element, leavers, starters, overtime and fee paid and for pay awards.

Sample checking of deductions and investigation and resolution of any variances.

Liaising with HR to resolve queries

Providing guidance to HR on technical issues


Providing guidance to HR on the tax and PAYE implications of new initiatives such as employee benefits and employee strategy.

Responsibility for investment management and reporting

Preparation of documentation for investment additions and disposals

Provision of reports to and support for the Trustees' Investment Sub Committee

Reporting on individual funds

Preparing the investment allocation

Preparation of the annual pension accounts

Compiling the yearend audit file for the pension accounts and liaising with pension auditors

Providing schedules to allow the preparation of the consolidated annual accounts.

Liaising with auditors on investment and payroll matters relating to the consolidated annual accounts.


Providing information, analysis and returns, on request, to other bodies such as the Office for National Statistics, and for internal purposes.

Preparation of returns and ad-hoc information to DCMS

You will need previous experience of preparing VAT returnsas well as 1st class technical knowledge of relevant accounting standards and regulatory framework, income tax, NI and VAT.

Good Excel skills will also be required and ideally you will have knowledge of the SORP 2005
