Practice Lead - Cardiff - Children & Families Team**The worker will be expected to be able to be available to come into Cardiff into Cardiff 5 days a week if needed. This will be so that they are able to observe the practice of SW - watch them with families - Shadow in court etc Cardiff Children Services is committed to developing the practice and service to children and young people. We are committed to developing a trauma informed and responsive service. A Practice lead develops the practice and is involved in skill and capability development across the organisation. Within Children services we recognise Practice Leadership is a central issue in enabling people providing support to do a good job. Practice Leaders are the custodians of the vision of the team and its culture. A practice leadership management style promotes positive staff experiences when working in challenging environments Practice Leadership encourages the workforce to demonstrate effective delivery of services by modelling the desired behaviours and using practical examples. This ensures that the workforce feel truly supported by a manager who understands the reality of their role. We are looking to recruit an experienced practitioner to lead on the delivery and active development of the service including the direct line management of a small core team of Future Practitioners. You will have experience of effecting change or be ready to move into a leadership role. This team will both provide direct community-based casework but also develop effective partnership working across the various localities and systems that these young people are in contact with. As Lead Practitioner you will be expected to take the lead in developing effective partnership working, oversee a small staff team and support casework in absence of practitioners. You will be an experienced senior practitioner with knowledge and expertise in a range of social and psychological approaches that can provide and enable holistic packages of care and intervention to promote good social work interventions. You will have a working knowledge and direct experience and be able to support a team working within extreme and challenging situations. The practice leads will be responsible for overseeing a small caseload, supporting less experienced workers in developing their skills, knowledge and experience and observing practice and providing feedback. they will shadow visits where necessary and assist with identifying CPD for practitioners. this is a real opportunity to lead in training and developing the social workers of the future whilst remaining in practice. you will receive supervision and support from an experienced team manager and contribute the ongoing excellence in practice program Cardiff has developed.

Your main responsibilities include:


  • Hold and effectively manage a complex and varied caseload with appropriate supervision, guidance, and support, reflecting the function of the team and the Vulnerable People Service in accordance with policy, procedures, guidance and legislation.
  • Undertake work within legislative frameworks including the preparation of written statements and representations to the judiciary at Court hearings.
  • You will be accountable for complex decision making in relation to caseloads ensuring professional judgement, service user involvement, needs led assessment, critical reflection, and analysis to inform this.
  • You will identify and assess levels of risk and need (within statutory frameworks) in often complex situations. Undertake safeguarding investigations and deliver protective and/or supportive services for individuals at risk and maintain up to date assessments, care plans and reviews.
  • You will be preparing statements of need/care and support plans, in consultation with other agencies as appropriate, that reflect the wishes of the individual and lead to the commissioning of personalised packages of care.
  • You will undertake direct work with adults and their families in line with care plans.
  • You will work cooperatively with both internal and external colleagues across multi agency boundaries.

Essential requirements:


  • Social Work England registration
  • Eligible to work in the UK
  • 2 years+ postqualified experience
  • Degree level or equivalent in Social Work
