Job summary:
This is a unique and exciting opportunity to work at the centre of Defence and help shape the Department's approach to risk management.
The role is in the Defence Risk & Assurance (DRA) team which provides key advice and support to the Defence Board and the Senior Leadership Team.
This role seeks to provide the DRA Risk Team with additional insight and support.The role will enable and support the Chief Risk Officer (CRO) with analysis and advice to develop the effectiveness and use of risk management in decision making across Defence.
The post holder will support the Assistant Head of Risk to drive continuous improvement and support the delivery of the Risk and Assurance change programme.
This is an exciting role for a risk professional wishing to work at the heart of a government department and gain strategic insight and understanding.
DRA works across the whole of the Department and provides risk management guidance to the most senior leaders and boards.
We are looking for a risk professional with proven experience and the ability to create and embed change.This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description:
The post will provide direct support, to the Assistant Head of Risk and Deputy Head of Risk, assuming responsibility for helping drive development and innovation.
Working to identify innovative and effective solutions to the challenges facing embedding risk management in a complex but rewarding environment.
This role requires a high level of professional competency and proven ability to communicate with stakeholders to improve the effectiveness and understanding of risk management.
A detailed knowledge of governance, risk, controls, and assurance are needed to support and advise stakeholders on the use and effectiveness of risk management frameworks.
The post holder should be able to support the production of senior level documentation for submission to committees and boards, including the Defence Board, Defence Delivery Group (DDG) and Defence Audit and Risk Assurance Committee (DARAC).
Key responsibilities/deliverables will include:
- Build knowledge of strategic risk and assurance themes and support the Assistant Head of Risk in the preparation of internal reporting including quarterly risk reports for the Defence Delivery Group (DDG) and Defence Audit and Risk Assurance Committee (DARAC) to provide succinct, reliable, timely and persuasive analysis.
- Assess and challenge reported management actions, the effectiveness of controls and assurance over them. Holding to account risk owners for action plans, driving reduction of risk across defence.
- Ensure reported risks are understood and that management actions, the effectiveness of controls and assurance over them have been reviewed and challenged to ensure that they are accurate to enable risk owners at all levels to make risk informed decisions.
- Contribute to the development of the risk management framework (JSP892) by producing and presenting framework ideas and solutions.
- Engage with senior Risk Owner teams responsible for managing the departments strategic risks to support understanding and the development of effective risk management practices, providing effective challenge where required.
- Use professional expertise to support Assistant Head of Risk to develop and embed risk management practices (e.g. Risk Appetite frameworks).
- Work with stakeholders to develop understanding of risk within the department and the benefits and use of effective techniques by developing upskilling material and providing expert advice.
- Develop and embrace opportunities for cross government working and learning, build a network cross government and externally that enables DRA and Defence to benefit from gathering public and private sector best practice.
