Assistant Media Officer, you will play a key part in the day-to-day running of our busy press office and an active role in developing press materials

About the team:


  • The media team are a key part of the Communications, Policy and Campaigns division, but we serve the media needs of the whole organisation. Collaboration and relationship building skills are the name of the game, as we work closely with a broad range of internal stakeholders, as well as our external partners, to generate influential coverage across Shelter's campaigns, fundraising, community and services outputs.
  • Our aim is to make sure housing and homelessness rides high on the political and public agenda through timely and powerful storytelling. We support Shelter to deliver change by amplifying our hardhitting research; giving a platform to people directly impacted by the housing emergency; profiling our incredible services; capitalising on highprofile supporters; and by swiftly seizing reactive opportunities.

About the role:


  • As an integral member of our media team, you will get the opportunity to work on a whole range of proactive national and regional media campaigns while also playing a pivotal role in the running of our busy, reactive press office. This will involve managing the press office inbox, ensuring reactive enquiries from national and regional media are dealt with efficiently, identifying and responding to stories as they break and helping to sell in stories to the media. We'll also train you to write for public audiences, including writing media plans, press releases, interview briefings and other press materials it really is a great opportunity to develop your career in media in a fastpaced and high performing team with a heritage of groundbreaking campaigns.

About you:


  • A natural storyteller, you can tell what makes a story stand out in a packed news agenda. You're curious, creative and confident, comfortable suggesting new ideas and taking feedback. You have strong written and verbal communications skills and can manage your time effectively. Given the news agenda rarely waits for anyone, you will be good at thinking on your feet and comfortable working to tight deadlines seeking help when you need it, and putting yourself forward to help others in return.
  • Finally, while prior knowledge of housing and homelessness is not a requirement, you will have a passion for social justice. There is a huge amount we need to achieve together, and you will thrive on the challenge.
