Our artists stretch the ambition further, reaching into every part of the building and the surrounding grounds. Our expert technical teams deliver the physical elements of all shows, artworks and events, working closely with the Programming and Producing teams to realise innovative ideas and making sure they are created in a safe, sustainable and exciting way. Our Lighting team will use state-of-the-art equipment from MA Lighting, ETC, Chauvet, ZacTrack and Capture Visualisation to help them deliver projects to the highest standard.

We are looking for expertise from all artforms; live music, visual and performing arts, theatre, corporate events and beyond.

The Deputy Head of Lighting will support the Head of Department, the Lighting & Video team and other Factory International teams to ensure that all of our spaces, events and shows are delivered to an exceptional standard and are accessible to everyone.

The responsibilities for Deputy Head of Lighting are;

  • Support the Head of Lighting & Video in the operation of all aspects of Factory International's technical equipment with particular emphasis on lighting and power distribution. To support the Head of Department with staffing levels and rota management, ensuring adequate staffing levels for all projects
  • To participate in the organisation and supervision of the get ins and fit up, show runs, and get outs. Planning appropriate staffing levels and apportioning equipment for the department, and ensuring that this is carried out in accordance with current Health & Safety legislation and Environmental Good Practice
  • To supervise, and lead discipline specific team members in, the delivery of production lighting and power distribution within the creation and delivery of concerts, artworks, shows and events. Oversee the rigging and operation of fixtures in the various venue spaces and to programme and operate lighting consoles as required
  • Oversee practical lighting of each production and project and assess the feasibility and cost implications of designs in conjunction with the Head of Department and other technical departments. From time to time, assist in lighting design for inhouse productions and events or act as a relighter for our touring work. This extends to programming and operating
  • Attend production meetings, rehearsals and technical rehearsals as required. Liaise with visiting technical departments, ensuring their requirements are met and they are compliant with Factory policies. Working with team members to develop and promote production related income streams and to maximise return on the commercial contract
  • Cover the position of Technical Duty Manager on a rota basis and manage other technical departments in the absence of the relevant manager. Provide advice to all other users of the venue with regard to the safe and proper use of venue lighting equipment and power distribution systems
  • In conjunction with other technical team members plan and deliver an effective programme of maintenance (inc. Planned Preventative Maintenance), housekeeping, stock control and testing for all appliances and lighting related equipment in the building
  • In conjunction with the Head of Department, Technical Manager and Director of Production & Building Operations, plan and carry out the recruitment, development and training of technical staff, ensuring the needs of the department are met
The person specification for Deputy Head of Lighting includes;

ESSENTIAL

  • Extensive practical experience of technical lighting in one or more art form (live music, theatre, performance art, etc), preferably in a producing environment
  • Experience of setup of grandMA consoles
  • Experience of lighting networking protocols
  • Ability to create, read and interpret a lighting design plan
  • Experience of rigging, focusing and operating lighting equipment in spaces of various sizes
  • Experience of supervising and managing staff with demonstrable leadership skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure and to prioritise competing workload demands
  • Experience of receiving or delivering large scale national and international touring productions
  • Proven experience of scheduling and planning staff requirements
  • Knowledge of technical drawing programs including AutoCAD or Vector Works
  • Knowledge
