Based at Vine Street Depot, Huddersfield, HD1 6NT or George Street Depot, Dewsbury, WF13 2LX

These roles involve working on public holidays excluding Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.


You will work as part of a team performing other cleansing duties or collecting refuse and trade waste from households and businesses.

As a frontline employee, good customer service, maintaining a positive image of the council as you interact with members of the public is essential


You will highlight any problems regarding areas of waste or issues which could affect the ability deliver customer focused services.

You may also be required to undertake other cleaning duties such as cleaning, snow cleaning, hand gritting and support clear up projects

To undertake your role, you will receive support and be provided with appropriate training and personal protective equipment


Requirements for the job:


  • Physically fit to be able to walk significant distances each day and move refuse bins for emptying and carry waste bags from properties to vehicles
  • Collect waste, operating lifting equipment safely, removing, loading waste and provision of liners.
  • Assist in stickering and provision of information to the public on refuse collection arrangements.
  • Good knowledge of health and safety applicable to the role
  • Numeracy and literacy skills to be able to complete time sheets and other basic documentation
  • Customer Service skills to engage with members of the public and handle any conflict in an appropriate way
  • Teamwork to make sure you work effectively with your colleagues and provide guidance and assistance to less experienced staff
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather


As a frontline ambassador for the Council, the right behaviours and attitudes are as important to us as the skills you bring to the job.


You will need to have a standard medical screening as determined by the Employee Healthcare Unit appropriate to occupational risk.
