We have an opportunity for a Clinical Fellow with a strong desire to work in our Cardiothoracic Anaesthetic's experienced and enthusiastic multi-disciplinary team in our Essex CTC ITU.


Our Critical care unit admits cardiac, thoracic surgical and cardiology patients where you will be part of the team that has successfully implemented the targeted temperature management protocol for post cardiac arrest patients.

Therefore, as well as gaining great clinical experience, you will have opportunities for training/experience in other areas such as echocardiography, bronchoscopy and education with regular departmental teaching program to which your expected to contribute.


Your role will be part of the middle grade Rota so requires at least two years post-registration experience in anaesthetics, which has regular contact with critically ill patients, of which 6 months or more should be at ST3/CT3 level or above.


You will work alongside our existing team of 9 Consultants, 10 Clinical Fellows & other members of the multi-disciplinary team.


As a Clinical Fellow in Cardiothoracic Anaesthetics and Cardiac Intensive Care you will look after patients requiring Level 2 and Level 3 care following Cardiothoracic Surgery or Cardiological procedures where the surgical work includes not only routine bypass grafts and valves but also complex aortic mitral and pulmonary procedures, and mínimally invasive cardiac surgery.

We have a growing thoracic workload including pneumonectomy, lobectomy, lung reduction surgery, chest reconstructions and renal cancer surgery needing cardiovascular support and you will be allocated dedicated time to developing proficiency in:

  • Echocardiography
  • Cardiac surgery
  • Thoracic surgery
  • Catheter Laboratories
  • Critical Care


You will be rotated during the post in the above fields as per the curriculum and may be tailored according to individual needs and will be expected to attend and assist at pre-assessment clinics taking responsibility to facilitate their efficient running, participating e in multi-disciplinary clinical meetings (MDT) and as part of the Directorate Team, assist in the cost-effective utilisation of resources, including items such as equipment and drugs.
