The Global Medical Scientific Liaison organisation is central to Ipsen's success as a specialty biopharmaceutical company acting to ensure alignment between the company and scientific and clinical experts in the specialty areas in which Ipsen works, namely Oncology, Rare diseases and Neuroscience.

The incumbent is responsible for leading and managing and building the Global MSL Organisation. The key aspects of the role include leadership to optimise the MSL activities.

This means developing, communicating and leading implementation of clear policy and processes to ensure that the MSL role and responsibilities are understood across the organisation and that MSL managers and MSLs are appropriately supported through hiring and an MSLs tenure.

This means extensive cross functional and matrix working by being the voice of the MSLs at all levels of the organisation as well as liaison with therapy areas, and the training and capabilities organisation to ensure required content is developed, trained and deployed, working with managers to enhance skills training and monitoring of performance and compliance.


The incumbent will be responsible, working with senior management across functions, on how to optimise MSL deployment including the appropriate in country activity recommendations, aligned with all Ipsen policies and organisational priorities, including but not limited to patient centricity, gathering insights and ensuring alignment of scientific understanding, supporting training and both medical and development studies as required.

The role supports a team of circa 120 MSLs.


Main responsibilities / job expectations

Strategy and Planning:

_Develop and Implement Global Policies and Procedures for MSL Activities_**- Lead successful development and execution of policies relating to MSL and external facing Medical activities.


  • Lead oversight of CRM medical module implementation, updates and MSL dashboard.
  • Ensure MSL activities included in Global and Local Medical plans, to ensure the global strategies and deliverables meet the needs of the organisation.
  • Build out the MSL planning calendar, templates, and processes.

Collaboration and Partnerships:

_Establish relationships across the organisation_**- Strong leadership of and partnering with Global, Regional and Local Medical Affairs Directors to ensure delivery of brand and global medical priorities.


  • Is the voice of the MSL organisation partnering with the GMs as a community and at individual level
  • Successful development and execution of key MSL activities through partnership with Global and Local Medical Affairs colleagues. Support development of Patient partnerships as per Patient Centricity Objectives and Guidelines.
  • Deep collaboration across GMA, especially with Training and capabilities and Therapeutic Areas to ensure upskilling competencies across the MSL organisation
  • Establishes collaborative working relationships with departments outside of MA including, but not limited to: Business Ethics and Social Responsibility, Regulatory Affairs; Finance; HR; Legal; IT; Commercial; and Clinical Operations to optimize the financial, technical, compliance, and strategic management of key functional areas.

Leadership :

_Lead the Global MSL organisation from Global perspective to ensure quality medical presence, expertise and services in all therapeutic areas and across geographies_**- Ensure processes for MSL activities including but not limited to patient, HCP and payer interactions, actionable insights collection, company sponsored, grant proposals, medical information, and Investigator Sponsored Trials are optimized.


  • Demonstrating Ipsen's values and ways of being ensure MSL activities are of the highest quality and drive better patient care.

Indirect Management and Development of Local MSL Teams

  • Challenge structure and functionality of local MSL teams, in the context of local operations and participation in GMA and R&D clinical studies
  • Be involved into recruitment, development & retention of qualified medical staff
  • Identify, develop and coach local MSL and MSL Manager talent with high potential open to international mobility
  • Involvement in discussions with and support as appropriate LMD for the recruitment of new MSL talent

Ethics & Compliance

  • Ensure local involvement in clinical trials is supported through appropriate training including the prevailing IPSEN SOPs and Good Clinical Practice
  • Ensure adequate training and support to ensure adherence to all prevailing IPSEN SOPs in relation to HCP and Patient/Patient organization interactions and Good Promotional Practice
  • Ensure implementation of Corporate pharmacovigilance requirements

Knowledge, abilities & experience

Experience and Qualifications:

  • MD, or PhD or PharmD with international and global experience of MSL role and leadership
  • 7 years of pharmaceutical industry working experience
