Description

The purpose of the smoking cessation maternity support worker is to work under direct supervision of the Band 7 Specialist Midwife for Smoke Free Pregnancy and other team members, to provide individualised smoking cessation support to women accessing maternity care provided by WWL.

This post will contribute to tackling inequalities in health through promoting and supporting people to stop smoking.

It focuses on engaging with people in communities and offering them practical support to change their behaviour to achieve their own choices and goals.


Provide intermediate smoking cessation support throughout pregnancy and the post-natal period, using the support of interventions such as CO monitoring and Nicotine Replacement therapy.


Work with mínimal indirect supervision operating within the assessed level of competence and being accountable for all aspects of own work.


Work with the specialist Tobacco Dependence lead midwife to deliver stop smoking support, undertake delivery of the Smokefree pregnancy incentive scheme with those women and families who meet the criteria, along with administration of the smokefree pregnancy data collection and collation.

Work in partnership with local stop smoking services and work within the remit of the Greater Manchester Smoke Free Pregnancy Guideline

Undertake relevant training in order to qualify as an intermediate smoking cessation advisor and maintain the skills and knowledge as necessary through participation in continuous development.

Identify and approach women who are eligible for intermediate intervention smoking cessation conversations in a variety of different settings. These may be in a clinical setting or home.

Work with indirect mínimal supervision from the midwife, operating at all times within the assessed level of competence. Clear professional boundaries and limitations will be discussed and monitored by the specialist midwife and Team Leader.

Work within the agreed and relevant policies and procedures and know how to access them.

Ensure that the relevant equipment is provided and maintained on an agreed schedule. Report any failings of equipment or other environmental factors to the specialist midwife/Team Leader.

Ensure the lone worker policy is followed at all times with lone worker devices worn and communication within the team before and after visits


Be aware of how to report incidents, concerns or complaints and escalate any concerns or complexities to the specialist midwife.


Participate in educating pregnant women about the benefits of stopping smoking in pregnancy and give support to those women wanting to quit.

Promote smoke free homes and support and advise women and families about passive smoking.


Deliver Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitoring to a high standard and engage in the data collection and collation of CO rates in pregnancy and post-partum.

Maintain accurate up to date and comprehensive records at all times.

Meet regularly with the specialist midwife to assess and direct progress.

Work closely with the local stop smoking services.

Undertake relevant training to maintain the skills and knowledge as necessary through participation in continuous development.

Seek advice and support as and when appropriate.

Plan own activities, sessions and plans to meet the needs of individuals within the service.


To be involved in the monitoring and evaluation of client feedback, offering recommendations as part of the team to improve services.

Enable utilisation of the smokefree pregnancy platform, for recording patient data, outcomes, review own personal performance against programme KPI's
