We're on the lookout new trustees
The role of trustee is rewarding and enjoyable.

Trustees are critical to the success of any charity:
our trustees take ultimate responsibility for everything we do at The Literacy Pirates. They use their knowledge, skills and experience to steer us in the right direction.

The Board currently consists of six trustees and we are recruiting three or four more to support with fundraising, digital expertise, teaching literacy, and financial management.

We are looking for people who want to use their skills, as well as lived and learnt experience to help us achieve our mission to make the world more equitable.

We are looking for a diverse range of voices to join as trustees so that we can push ourselves to make even more impact for even more children.

What does a Trustee do?

As a trustee, you will help us to:

  • Set the strategic direction for the charity, and ensure we don't drift from our charitable objectives.
  • Commit to the organisation's success and support at events and with campaigns.
  • Safeguard the reputation of The Literacy Pirates.
  • Support the staff team with your expertise and advice.
  • Ensure the charity complies with all its statutory duties.
  • Come prepared and enthusiastic to all trustee meetings.
  • Take an active part in Board meetings and at least one Advisory Committee (Finance, HR & Governance, Digital, Fundraising or Education & Impact).
For definitions of 'trustee' and things like 'charitable objectives' take a look at this guidance.

There is quite a bit of jargon but don't let it put you off:
we give a full induction and support you along the way to learn about charity operations.

Trustees meet three times a year at lively and interesting Board meetings in Oct/Nov, Feb/March and June/July. These are a mix of online and in-person in Dalston, Hackney.

Between Board meetings, trustees attend one or two Advisory Committee meetings, generally online.

A successful trustee spends, on average, half a day per month preparing for and attending meetings, visiting us, and coming to events.

Trustees volunteer for two years, after which they can be re-elected for a further two terms.

There is also a six-month trustee probation period at the start, which gives you a chance to try out a couple of meetings and ensure that the role and time commitment works for you.

The trustee role is voluntary, though we reimburse all out of pockets expenses.

After an induction process, training and support is offered throughout including a buddy to support you through the first couple of meetings.

As part of good governance, each trustee has an appraisal annually and we regularly review the way we work together, as well as when and how we meet to accommodate board members other commitments.

What areas of expertise are we looking for?
We are looking for specific expertise to help build the team's knowledge and connections within the following areas:

Digital and Tech / IT:

Our ambition is to create an outstanding learning programme delivered online. You'd bring expertise to help us navigate the opportunities that tech has to offer the educational space. You'd help find potential digital partnerships and generally support us to achieve a 'next level' online programme.

Fundraising:

We are going to increase our annual income by 15% each year.

You'd be an ambassador who can help forge new partnerships within business and charitable foundations and helps us build a strong business case that will attract even more donors.

Teaching Literacy:

We use Reading for Pleasure and Everyone a Writer as the central pedagogical approach.

Our use of these approaches online is ground breaking, and we want to ensure we remain one of the 'best in class' in this area.

You'd work with the Director of Impact and Delivery, and lead the Education & Impact Committee.

Financial Management:

Our Finance Committee plays an important role in having a detailed oversight of our finances. You'd lead the Finance Committee and work closely with our Director of Finance to ensure we remain financially healthy.

What are we looking for?

  • A strong, visible passion for what we do.
  • Exhibit strong interpersonal and relationship building abilities
  • Experience and comfort with an ambassadorial role.
  • Tact and diplomacy, with the ability to listen and engage effectively.
  • Ability to foster and promote a collaborative environment.
  • Strong personal networks and networking capabilities that can be utilised for the benefit of The Literacy Pirates.
  • Ability to commit time to conduct the role effectively, including travel and attending events out of office hours.

We offer plenty of support if you are new to the role of trustee. We will ensure that you have an induction to everything we do and we can offer training.
