Main duties and responsibilities Clinical Practice Provide the core ACP role of assessing, diagnosing, planning and managing paediatric patients with undifferentiated undiagnosed clinical presentations.

Undertake physical examinations as indicated by the patients condition; analyse complex clinical signs and investigation results to consider differential diagnoses and initiating treatment under supervision.

Perform clinical procedures appropriate to the history and physical examination of the patient, including further invasive testing and treatments requiring highly developed skills and precision, including (but not limited to) catheterisation, cannulation, and blood sampling.

Requests investigations such as blood, urine and other laboratory tests, electrocardiographs (ECGs), ultrasound scans, X-Rays, and computed tomography(CT) scans in accordance with IR(ME)R regulations and as the training programme/ local policy allows.


Analyses multiple sources of data including patient history, physical examination and investigation findings when making diagnoses, clinical judgements and evaluating care provided; presenting this information, to speciality /senior medical staff.

Continuously re-evaluates findings and clinical response to treatment and establishes an appropriate ongoing management plan accordingly.

According to training programme and local policy, prescribes (if an independent prescriber) and reviews medication for therapeutic effectiveness appropriate to patient need and in accordance with best/evidence-based practice and national and local protocols and within the roles scope of practice and legal framework.

Work on the medical roster, predominantly within the Paediatric Assessment Unit with appropriate supervision and support across the service.

It will also include time on the inpatient wards to help develop ongoing skills. Integrate with other professional teams across the service and demonstrate effective multi-disciplinary team working.

Respond to emergencies and initiate appropriate management within agreed guidelines, utilising clinical judgement and diagnostic skills to provide appropriate treatment for sick children and young people.

Develop as a clinical leader and act as a positive role model.

Contribute to the development of local guidelines and standards. Practice in compliance with your respective codes of professional conduct (NMC/HCPC) and within your agreed scope of practice. Communicates effectively with patients, carers, colleagues, and others using appropriate communication styles. Anticipates barriers to communication and ensure patients and significant others are kept fully informed and consent to treatment.

Leadership and Management To contribute and participate in departmental, trust wide and regional meetings as appropriate. Contribute to the ongoing development of the trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner program for the paediatric service. Participate in and/or lead practice developments and participate in clinical research where appropriate.

To participate in all aspects of Clinical Governance by providing expert input and supporting quality improvement projects/initiatives To advise, encourage and share knowledge utilising the latest research and practice development, through literature and peer reviews.


Take responsibility for own learning and performance and to provide clinical leadership by acting as role model, educator, facilitator, mentor, and preceptor.

Research Develops and contributes to local guidelines, interpreting and adapting national protocols and standards to enhance patient care and safety.

Critically appraise the outcomes of relevant research, audit, and evaluation to enhance own practice. To contribute and participate in research activity, adhering to good research practice guidance and disseminate findings.


Produce a portfolio of work-based learning based on RCPCH and HEE competencies to provide evidence of the development towards becoming an autonomous advanced clinical practitioner.

Take responsibility for ensuring completion of any statutory or mandatory training as required for their role.

Act as constant source of clinical and theoretical knowledge for all grades and disciplines of a staff, patients, and their significant others.

Providing support and clinical advice based on evidence-based research.

Responsible for their own learning and performance including the participation in clinical supervision and relevant research evidence.

Develops education in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team ensuring that all patient care is based on current research and best practice.

To develop specialist teaching sessions for staff related to acute paediatrics, providing teaching on a formal and informal basis.

Communication and Relationship Skills To have a high level of advanced personal communication skills both written and verbal, sensitive non-discriminatory interpersonal skills and basic counselling skills.
