Reporting to the Vice President of Commercial Services, the Head of Business Services role is to align customer requirements to the appropriate operational resource on new projects or extended projects.

Acting as a key internal facilitator between resource scheduling, operational proposal leads, contracts, programme management, therapeutic oversight and the Business Development team.

Ensuring new key opportunities have the right business visibility and internal support prior to being contractually won and then transferred smoothly into operations.


Responsibilities:


  • To facilitate the preparation of technical proposals (commercial value proposition, clear scientific strategy as well as knitting together different author styles and language) and presentation materials for our potential and existing customers working closely with the Business Development team. Focusing on aligning departmental content into consistent businessfocussed commercial packages, which are delivered to the customer within defined SLAs. The expectation is that the BD team will be actively involved throughout to jointly shape the final summary value proposition.
  • Focus on proposal templates, scope templates and standardisation of best commercial practice.
  • Attend customer calls and meetings along with other BD team members to support proposal shape.
  • Facilitating internal calls to shape proposals and get the correct information in a customer friendly form.
  • Facilitating customer calls when 'front of house' BD cannot attend and communicating appropriately with the bigger proposal team.
  • Working closely with Contracts to provide a scientific/technical angle on proposal commercial terms and areas of business risk. Focus on project risk v contract terms (e.g., milestones, stage gates,).
  • Ensuring all commercial and proposals sent are formally captured in the appropriate customer folders and the CRM.
  • Preparation of formal project scopes that can be aligned to the work orders. Effectively commercialising the customer slides into a concise, clear and consistent service offering.
  • Formal handover of new projects from Business Services to the scientific operational departments as part of project opening ("internal project kick off").
  • Working closely with the Operational departments/other BD team members in the 'fee for service' areas to get tighter, faster scopes locked down with T&Cs.
  • Attending customers calls and meetings if appropriate as the internal face of Business Development.
  • Maximising profitability of the work we provide to customers, focussing on FTE rate maximisation, business visibility and contract revenue stability.
  • Establish, develop, and maintain positive business and customer relationships.
  • Support other BD team members by creating and participating in meeting, presentations and proposal process.
  • Line management of the Business Services Team, ensuring delivery of key activities in line with defined SLAs and performance of the team to KPIs.
  • Continual improvement to Business Service offerings in line with business need.
  • Consultative and collaborative approach when dealing with customers and internal team members.
  • Provide creative, consistent, concise, and accurate internal and external communications.

Person Requirements:


  • Significant experience in successfully leading contract and business service activities within the Biotech/Pharma, Life Sciences industries.
  • Experience of integrated drug discovery, preferentially in a CRO or industrial setting Be educated to PhD level or equivalent, in a scientific or business field.
  • Previous line management experience, matrix management experience would be advantageous.
  • Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing, generally and on complex scientific and technical topics.
  • Commercially agile with the ability to adapt to changing market conditions quickly and amend activities as appropriate.
  • Possess strong organisational skills and the ability to work in a fastmoving highpressure environment.
  • You will be enthusiastic and selfmotivated, with the great sense of ownership.
  • Excellent attention to detail and be able to see work through from start to finish.
  • Proficient in all MS packages; MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
