Description

The Estates Department operate and maintain, energy and environmental resources, controls, electrical and mechanical services providing power, lighting, heating, air conditioning to wards, outpatients and operating theatres.

Estates directly impacts on patient welfare, frontline clinical care, infection prevention and control and energy efficiency and sustainability across the Estates Trust.


The Estates Assistant will work as part of a multidisciplinary team which is responsible for providing the safe operation of planned, reactive, and emergency maintenance to The RMH Trust.

By carrying out their duties as instructed and undertaking maintenance, installation, and new works tasks to a high standard for all grounds work and services throughout the Trust.

This will assist in providing a comfortable, safe, and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

  • To understand the workings of the buildings and grounds in NHS/Trust premises. Ensuring that they are maintained to a high standard and that all equipment and grounds are utilised in a safe and efficient manner.
  • To ensure any fault, defect or malfunction of plant, equipment or the fabric of the trust buildings/grounds that affect the patient environment are speedily reported to the relevant supervisor/manager in order to affect appropriate repair. Building Energy Management system (BEMS) can be used for this.
  • To carry out work as requested by management/supervision using the appropriate current works docket/request system and ensuring that all associated paperwork is completed as required.
  • To carry out work unsupervised for all trades/activities within the department appropriate to skills and experience, to include low use outlet flushing of water systems.
  • To respond to work, maintenance, diagnose faults and carry out appropriate and timely repairs in a safe working order to all building/ground's components and equipment.
  • To undertake grounds works, execution of minor new works, design, manufacture, assemble/erect where required to do so, assist, or oversee contractors and subcontractors which may involve installing specialist equipment and or plant.
  • To service, maintain and be aware of repairs the building fabric, all plant and equipment in connection with the Trust's Planned Preventative Maintenance scheme.
  • To assist with grounds maintenance/labouring duties if required and to carry out cleaning duties such as plant rooms, ducts and drains using appropriate chemicals and cleaning products. To be aware of the safe handling and usage of such materials.
  • To ensure work undertaken is completed in a timely manner and that appropriate records are updated through the requisite system.
  • To use all tools, service and test equipment provided to assist in the maintenance and service of plant/equipment and to use and maintain personal protective equipment when it is a requisite of the job.
  • To be able to use and maintain all relevant tools and equipment necessary to carry out the duties of the post effectively.
  • To work collaboratively, understand the interrelationship between the various trades and other works/estates staff, carrying out or assist with a varied range of work outside main trade as appropriate, e.g., setting up of meeting rooms
To instruct others on aspects of his work relating to his original trade.

  • To be mindful of the need for the safe, secure, storage and usage of plant, equipment, stock, and tools.
  • Due to the nature of the Estates function and the requirement to maintain the hospital, staff may be requested from time to time to work beyond the normal working hours to affect repairs or make safe should emergencies occur.
