The outcome of the council's Total Pay and Reward review means the full-time salary for this position from 1st
April 2024 will be £33,024 to £35,745. The salary will be pro rata for part time and term time vacancies.

Trading Standards Enforcement Officer


The Councils Trading Standards Service has an opportunity for a part or fully qualified advice and enforcement officer with direct experience of working within a trading standards or regulatory function to join our busy Team which is located at The Calibration Test Centre in Hull.


Our Trading Standards Service aims to build a safe, fair, and legal marketplace for East Riding of Yorkshire, helping businesses succeed and safeguarding communities.

The team is part of a larger group of regulatory services within the Public Protection Group and you will be expected to work as an officer across all services delivered by the Team although initially you would be based in the Fair-Trading Team.


You will be joining a busy, friendly, and professional team and you should have the ability to work in a team environment as well as on your own providing a customer focused responsive risk based professional service.


You will need the ability to quickly assimilate information, consider the issues, risks and legal implications and identify appropriate courses of action.


An ability to organise/prioritise work, co-ordinate a variety of tasks in a clear and logical way and meet agreed deadlines is essential.


You should be self-motivated, with excellent presentation and verbal/written communication skills with an enthusiastic and positive approach to carrying out tasks and working with local business and with our residents.

You will be expected to deliver against a challenging work plan.


We are looking for a dedicated officer who can demonstrate recent and direct experience of working within a Trading Standards or regulatory service environment with a broad range of knowledge and investigative skills as well as experience on working in specialist topic areas.


You should have a car available and insured for business purposes and will be expected to drive across the East Riding of Yorkshire in this role.


The Team works in an agile way which includes being office based at Hull on certain days as well as working from home carrying out site visits as required to deliver the service.

Days of work are Monday to Friday with occasional evenings and weekends required.

The appointed officer will work across all functions of the service and:

  • Enforce trading standards legislation by giving advice, inspection, investigation, sampling, and other means
  • Investigate offences under trading standards legislation and taking appropriate action under the Council's Enforcement Policy, including conducting interviews in accordance with PACE 1984 and all other relevant legislation
  • Collect evidence and prepare case reports for possible prosecution and attending legal proceedings
  • Undertake sampling of goods and services to determine if breaches of trading standards legislation are occurring, and take appropriate action
  • Enforce relevant Age Restricted Products legislation, including test purchasing
  • Advise businesses and traders of their legal obligations relating to civil and criminal trading standards legislation
  • Maintain proper records for all work undertaken
  • Undertake enforcement activities occasionally outside normal office hours


Applications are invited from those who hold or are currently studying for the Diploma in Trading Standards, DCATS or its equivalent with an interest and working knowledge of intelligence systems used within a Trading Standards Service.
