This role will be based in Northumbria Area Team and will help to deliver Natural England's vision for Connecting People with Nature by addressing barriers that prevent or limit people's ability to access Nature and greenspace.

The successful applicant will be expected to work across the North-East of England with a wide range of partners supporting project delivery.


An inclusive approach is really important to Natural England's aims of removing the barriers that people face to accessing nature, and of delivering nature recovery.

You will have a role in ensuring that all our work is planned and delivered in an inclusive way that is mindful of the diverse needs of different individuals and communities.


Your role will span the breadth of our priorities; this includes our work to develop nature recovery networks, to make green social prescribing more easily available, to build on the opportunities of the newly opened English Coast Path and to encourage the development of high-quality green infrastructure.

You will also be part of a national network of Inclusion experts, who will share ideas and best practice.


Your work with colleagues at Natural England will identify and deliver opportunities to maximise the inclusion impact of all our work.

As Senior Adviser for Connecting People with Nature for Northumbria Area Team you will:

  • Use the latest economic and social data from region to ensure that our team have a detailed understanding of the communities in the North-East and potential barriers that different groups experience in accessing to nature and greenspace.
  • Support team members working on place base projects and initiatives to identify, build and manage key relationships with community representatives, partner organisations, and community groups, helping them to demonstrate meaningful engagement and share best practice.
  • You will support and advise our National Nature Reserve (NNR) teams in looking for opportunities to strengthen our community engagement work, focusing particularly at the opportunities offered by Castle Eden Dene NNR.
  • You will lead on flagship local delivery projects, agreed with your local area team, that focus on inclusion alongside nature recovery. This may involve connecting with new partners and identifying opportunities for funding to deliver on our priorities and ensure people have access to and are connected with high quality nature close to where they live. You will work with colleagues, partners and communities to create a vision for that place and to encourage engagement for all of the local community though access, enjoyment and habitats restoration.
A driving licence will be useful but is not essential. Some site visits or partnership meetings may not be easily accessible by public transport. Natural England staff have access to hire cars for work purposes.

Description

  • Extensive relevant work experience in community engagement/outreach, or leading groups in decision making and delivery, or within or in partnerships with one or more diverse groups, not necessarily in the environmental sector. Alternatively, or additionally a degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Diverse groups could include but are not limited to those involving younger people, older people, people from ethnic minority backgrounds, disabled people, those living with mental health conditions, and those living in areas of multiple deprivation or other hard to reach communities.
  • An ability to take information and evidence on how people engage with nature (or fail to do so) and convert it into ideas and projects that improve lives
  • A sound understanding of EDI issues and relevant legislative frameworks is desirable.
