Senior Disaster Management Co-ordinator (MENA)

Contract type: 12-month fixed term contract (maternity cover)

Hours per week: 35 (Mon - Fri)

Salary:
£42,014 - £46,737 (plus London Weighting of £3,344, if applicable) per annum


A fantastic opportunity has arisen to make a real impact and lead British Red Cross (BRC) responses to disasters across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).


Why this role is important


You'll provide leadership, analysis and high-level advisory support within the context of Red Cross / Crescent National Society disaster management responses and capacity across the MENA and Europe regions.

You'll have a strong focus on National Society development across priority contexts to enable National Societies to manage small-medium scale disasters within the geographical region.

You'll use expert knowledge of the region and established relationships with regional Movement actors in the IFRC (International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies) to represent BRC in its influence of support to our partners and other Red Cross national societies when required.


What you'll be doing


Disaster management coordination - To manage or support emergency responses and to oversee BRC's response lead for emergencies across MENA (where no Country Manager is present), ensuring that the regional DMC delivers in-region advise, resource mobilisation and allocation of BRC resources in the most effective and efficient way.


Relationship management - Seek out and build strategic relationships within the RC/RC Movement at IFRC regional level and other organisations in support of the International Strategy and Movement cooperation.


Resource and Mobilisation - Act as a lead focal point for the region to influence BRC's internal and external engagement, influencing and resource mobilisation relating to disaster management.


Planning, strategy and leadership - Take a lead role in inputting thought leadership for the annual planning and budgeting process across the MENA Regions and monitor implementation in relation to disaster management.


This role might be for you if you have

  • Significant understanding of dynamics related to sudden onset, chronic and conflict response and recovery programmes
  • Strong understanding of the humanitarian system
  • Substantial experience working in the development, delivery and coordination of Disaster Response projects, including the design of contingency plans, capacity and needs assessments, SOPs etc
  • Significant experience working overseas in humanitarian contexts, ideally during emergency responses
  • Spoken / written language relevant to the region would be an advantage

Meet the team


As a member of the International Directorate, you will be part of a directorate responsible for BRC's international humanitarian response and disaster management, support to resilience programmes and organisational development of our partner Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies around the world.


The work of the International Directorate also includes humanitarian policy and advocacy activities and upholding and promoting International Humanitarian Law.

British Red Cross' international work is carried out in coordination and partnership with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
