Purpose of the role:


The primary focus of this role is to provide the first line of coordination and supervision to the security operation at ExCeL London.

The post holder will action and coordinate security activity as directed by the Security Management Team. They will be the first line for 1-up guidance to the Security Officers. This role will primarily work a rotated shift pattern of 4 shifts on and 4 shifts off. There is an expectation that Controllers will complete paid additional duties to cover their peers and events as required.


The role is to provide a highly professional and effective security service to our customers, clients, visitors and staff, protecting our people and our assets.

This role can be deployed on the ground if required although primary duties will be within the Security Control Room.

The role will require you to cover the Security Supervisor role. During these times you will act as the Out of Hours Duty Manager for the ExCeL London site.


Key Responsibilities:

High Performing Delivery of Security Services

  • As the Security Controller you will be responsible for firstline supervision of the team and activity within the Security Control Room. You will also coordinate security activity on the ground. This will include ensuring incoming enquiries are logged and an appropriate response or resolution is given, escalating incidents or occurrences that are outside of remit or require a higher management decision.
  • You will carry out all Control Room duties, ensuring all procedures are adhered to under the guidance of the Security Supervisor.
  • You will work towards the common goal of delivering worldclass events. As part of the Security Team, you are a vital element of our Security and Counter-Terrorism Strategy.
  • Working within the ExCeL Security Control Room you will be a key contact to our clients, customers, visitors and staff. As such you will deliver security to the highest levels of integrity, customer service, behaviour and personal appearance when carrying out your role.
  • As a Security Controller you will promote and deliver security to the highest levels of integrity, customer service, behaviour and personal appearance when carrying out your role.
  • As Security Controller you must provide a supportive and collaborative atmosphere where team members can raise concerns and frustrations you should work with individuals to encourage them to think of possible solutions and recognise where barriers to these solutions may exist. You must take ownership of feedback and not deliver messages 'on behalf of others.
  • You will always be proactive, seeking to find and resolve issues within your work area; providing suggestions on how to improve our operation to the Security Management team. You may be asked to see an improvement project through to completion.
  • You will support both new starters and Security Officers through their induction process/career progression, passing on your knowledge, providing guidance, and support and making recommendations on training requirements to the Security Supervisor.
  • You will contribute to the creation and maintenance of department documentation such as Standard Operating Procedures, Assignment Instructions, Processes, Forms etc.

Security Systems & Equipment

  • As a Security Controller you will become an expert in all security systems, providing support and guidance to newly deployed Officers as and when required. You may be required to cover shifts for the Security Supervisors role.
  • You will often use various systems or items of equipment including but not limited to CCTV, personal bodyworn video cameras (including storage systems), the PA/VA system, radio communications, Lost Property system and the Security Patrol Vehicle. You will ensure you are fully versed in how to use all systems and equipment.
  • You will be responsible for ensuring checks have been carried out daily on all security and relevant live safety systems including but not limited to the CCTV system, radio system, bodyworn video systems (including storage systems), key management systems, access control system, the radio communication system, PA/VA system.
  • You will compile and maintain fault reporting and logging for all systems, ensuring there is a handover between shifts and repairs are made in a timely manner whilst escalating critical or ongoing faults to the Security Management Team.
