Fir Tree College is a small, independent specialist college supporting up to 35 young people aged 16-24 with SEND.Our students are mixed ability with a diverse range of interests and additional support needs that predominantly link to ASD, SEMH and moderate learning difficulties.
Due to growth the college is looking to appoint at least two learning support assistants to join the delivery team between Monday and Thursday each week.
The role of the teaching assistant is to act under the direction and supervision of tutors in developing and delivering inclusive teaching and support strategies to facilitate learning for SEND students.
You will provide person centred support to students in accordance with their support plans and facilitate access to learning within the Centre and wider community as part of the college curriculum.
From time to time and at our absolute discretion we may require you to perform other duties within your capabilities in order to meet our business needs.
Teaching assistants may also be asked to support learners on work experience in practical environments.Main Responsibilities
- Support the students under the supervision of the tutor.
- Assisting in the preparation of learning resources.
- Encourage student's confidence, selfesteem and independence.
- Encouraging students to communicate with one another and with staff.
- Support students to develop knowledge and skills in preparation for transition into adulthood.
- Support with the monitoring and setting of progress targets as part of the individual learning plan for students whom you support.
- Helping students understand instructions, through repetition, rephrasing or demonstrating.
- Contribute to planning and differentiating curriculum and target setting for students.
- Support with individual education, social, behavioural and personal development programmes.
- Adhere to all Safeguarding requirements as outlined in the organisational Policies to protect the welfare of children and vulnerable adults, this is inclusive of radicalisation and extremism.
- Recognising signs of distress in students by offering reassurance through agreed intervention strategies.
- To promote the highest standards of Health and Safety practice in relation to all aspects of the role.
- To promote equality and diversity, recognising and actively challenging stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination helping to create an inclusive learning environment and workplace for students and staff.
- Abide to all organisational policies including Safeguarding, Data Protection and Health and Safety undertaking recommended training as and when necessary.
- Support to develop effective relationships with all stakeholders as appropriate to the role i.e., parents/carers.
- Drive your own continuous professional development, through participation in the company's mandatory CPD activities, which includes upskilling, staff learning days and training events appropriate to the job role.
Extended Responsibilities
- Support with the promotion and public relations work at events such as Open/Parents Evenings and Enrolment sessions.
- Provide assistance to students travelling to and from college on the college transport in the role of a chaperone.
- To support in transporting students to enrichment, recreational and work experience placements using college transport.
