The post is to work on the Tier 2 (middle grade) neonatal rota until 5th September 2023.


The post is to work on the Tier 2 (middle grade) neonatal rota from as soon as possible until 5thSeptember 2023.

The post holder will be supported by a resident junior tier doctor or Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (covering purely neonatology) and a neonatal consultant.

The unit is a Lead Centre and Regional Intensive Care Unit within our newborn network, receiving referrals for tertiary intensive care, including, HFOV, NO and therapeutic hypothermia.

The birth population is 6,800 -7,000 deliveries per year.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a purpose built modern unit opened in 2009, providing 6 intensive care, 6 high dependency, 14 special care cots.


The neonatal service is and active training unit and in conjunction with Keele Universities, the on-site Undergraduate Medical School opened in September 2002.

We train all levels of trainees including neonatal grid posts.


We are part of the Child Health Directorate, which is one of the largest in the country, with many paediatric sub specialties receiving tertiary care referrals, Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and Community Paediatrics.


University Hospitals of North Midlands has two sites: Royal Stoke University Hospital, located in Stoke-on-Trent, and County Hospital, located in Stafford. From these hospitals we provide a full range of general acute hospital services for people living in and around Staffordshire and beyond. The Trust also provides specialised services for three million people in a wider area, including neighbouring counties and North Wales.


Our specialised services include cancer diagnosis and treatment, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, renal and dialysis services, neonatal intensive care and paediatric intensive care.

We are recognised for our particular expertise in trauma, respiratory conditions, spinal surgery, upper gastro-intestinal surgery, complex orthopaedic surgery, laparoscopic surgery and the management of liver conditions.

The Trust has some of the most modern operating theatres in Europe.

The level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Royal Stoke University Hospital is a lead centre and regional NICU within the Staffordshire, Shropshire and Black Country Newborn Network.

The birth population is 7000 deliveries per year.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a purpose built modern unit, which opened in 2009, providing 6 intensive care, 6 high dependency and 14 special care cots.

In 2016 we opened a Transitional Care Unit, which has expanded to 10 cots in January 2019.

We have 600 NICU admissions and 630 TCU admissions each year, including tertiary referrals from other neonatal units within and outside our newborn network.

The unit has facilities for conventional and volume targeted ventilation, HFOV, inhaled nitric oxide, cranial ultrasonography, echocardiography and therapeutic hypothermia.

There are facilities for MRI and EEG in ventilated babies and weekday neonatal surgeons on site. The NICU has been awarded a Care Excellence Platinum Award by the trust.

The Neonatal department consists of 8 consultants who all have an area of specialist interest or responsibility. The consultants operate a 2 in 8 consultant-of-the-week on-service model and a 1 in 8 on-call rota.

The post is not recognised as a formal training slot. However, the on-site training opportunities will be the same as the other ST4 doctors.
