The Job You'll Do;

  • To support the Engineering Manager and other managers and directors in all design related activities as well as delivering whatever is required from the Design department to fulfil the broader business objectives.
  • Proactively liaise with sales, finance, production and QA employees and other members of the design team, customers, consultants and third parties to optimize time and schedule design jobs both at the point of quotation order acceptance through to deliveryof finished goods
  • Review and develop customer brief/specifications, identify, and resolve potential issues and formulate scope of works to take from concept to design.
  • Support effective capacity planning; agree the timeline, individuals' roles and responsibilities at project level and to coordinate activities or trouble shoot to ensure design projects are delivered on time and in full.
  • Carry out or approve necessary calculations to ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, regulations, design standards and customer requirements.
  • Material selection
  • Lead in preparation or assist draftsmen in the preparation of component and assembly drawings using AutoCAD/ Solidworks.
  • Compilation of technical files / project folders as part of 3rd party inspection process / legal obligations.
  • Obtaining of design approvals from 3rd parties.
  • Organise the issue and control of drawings to departments and 3rd parties and ensure technical files, project folders and drawing files are maintained to a unified system.
  • To provide the purchasing department with necessary information in order to purchase materials and obtain correct certified material within appropriate time scales, which would include separating off the long lead items.
  • To support the production of accurate BOMs and costing analysis
  • Ensure all operational requirements of equipment are clearly defined for end user operation.
  • Directly line manage team members, including engineers and draftsmen, managing their performance, and developing their skills where necessary.
  • Responsibility for the team KPIs and ensuring both the team and individual team members deliver departmental targets.
  • Take initiative to drive continuous improvement changes within the department, planning and leading projects to that effect.
  • Support the engineering manager in reviewing sales orders to correctly define specifications and ensure correct drawings, BOMs, and other design department outputs fulfil customer requirements.

About You;

  • Experience of working to design industry standards / codes.
  • Experience of producing stress calculations.
  • Ability and skills necessary to take projects from inception through to "completion" covering all aspects of design process.
  • Desirable Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
  • Experience working with third party inspection companies to obtain design approvals.
  • Minimum of 3 years engineering experience.
  • Skills sufficient to produce 'professional' level 2D and 3D drawings using AutoCAD / Solidworks or similar.
  • Excellent communication skills are essential allowing for effective liaison with other departments and third parties.
  • A commitment to continuous professional development.


  • IT literate

  • Knowledge and use of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Good understanding of various manufacturing techniques associated with sheet metal fabrication.
  • Ability to work to demanding deadlines independently across multiple projects for which you are solely responsible or when directing and supporting colleagues to whom work has been delegated.
  • Willingness to work in a flexible manner and occasionally outside of normal working hours if required.
  • Experience of using FEA (Solidworks Simulation), ANSYS or similar.
