About the team/division
Hiscox London Market has an exciting future. The market is booming and rates are the best we have seen in years.

The Marine Energy & Speciality Division is critically important to the success of Hiscox London Market, with over US$400m of premium it incorporates six lines of business; Marine and Energy Liability, Upstream Energy, Power and Renewables, Hull, Cargo and Space.

The Pricing function is embedded within the four Hiscox London Market divisions:
Property, Crisis Management, Casualty and Marine, Energy & Specialty. There is a Head of Pricing in each division, reporting directly to the Divisional Director.


The Head of Marine, Energy & Specialty Pricing will directly support the Divisional Director in helping to analyse the opportunities that present themselves to ensure the division smashes the plan.


The Head of Pricing will lead a team of three actuaries / analysts who support each line in the division.


This role is certified under SMCR

The Role
You will need to provide high quality, timely, pricing and portfolio analysis and develop / maintain pricing models. You will also perform profitability reviews to help with strategic portfolio management by targeting the most profitable business.


You must be able to build strong working relationships with underwriters - being perceived as a commercial business partner is essential.


You must be able to operate effectively in a commercial environment and to simply communicate the results of actuarial analyses.

Successfully leading and empowering the team of three actuaries/analysts will be critical in this role.

  • Contribute to the profitability of the lines of business by conducting regular reviews for different segments of the portfolio.
  • Take ownership and accountability for the Marine, Energy & Specialty pricing models.
  • Price and review large deals efficiently and provide valuable insights that drive tangible underwriting changes to the portfolio.
  • Be responsible for first class service to the underwriters.
  • Effectively manage and motivate the pricing team to ensure they are performing effectively.
  • Support the development of market leading pricing systems to improve the operation of pricing models, data storage and integration with underwriting systems to gain a competitive advantage.
  • Assist with formulating the reinsurance strategy and understand how it impacts Hiscox's capital.
  • Facilitate exposure management analysis with the central exposure management team.
  • Support Underwriters at broker and client meetings.
  • Lead horizon scanning across the Division ensure we have a line of sight on all issues which may impact the book and have taken a view on how each will impact on pricing.
  • Build strong relationships with other teams such as Reserving, Finance and MI to gain wider input that drives the Division forward.

Our must haves

  • Be a numerate graduate who has excellent communication skills
  • A track record of providing high quality pricing analysis within General Insurance, preferably the London Market
  • Be credible across the business and be able to build strong relationships, in particular with underwriters. Capable of working with people at all levels within and external to the business
  • Highly results driven, with the energy and determination to succeed in a very fast paced environment where the pace of response and leadership is critical to success
  • Creative, proactive and innovative

  • An experienced people leader, able to motivate and effectively manage large teams who pull in the same direction
