The Education Welfare Service supports parents and schools in ensuring all children in Calderdale attend regularly and achieve their potential.


The Education Welfare Service has a legal responsibility to monitor school attendance and consider court action against parents whose children do not attend school regularly.

We have an exciting opportunity for an Education Welfare Officer to join our existing team. You will have experience of working with children, families and schools within an education welfare environment or related field.

A committed team worker, you will carry a caseload and work on your own initiative. Time management skills are essential given the variety of settings within this challenging yet rewarding role.

  • Build and sustain relationships with schools to ensure the right level of support is delivered and available to improve attendance.
  • Form relationships with a wide variety of agencies to enable families to improve attendance.
  • Identify attendance problems and possible solutions.
  • Provide a range of targeted interventions in order to secure improved attendance.
  • Explain to parents/carers their legal responsibility for their child/children/s education
  • Write, organise and analyse case notes and prepare and present court reports.
  • Prosecute cases through the magistrates court and issue Penalty Notices where appropriate.
  • Refer to other services and professionals, when necessary.
  • Communicate with a range of partners, colleagues and families.
  • Give support by home visits and meeting parents and pupils in school.
  • Provide legislative guidance and advice to schools, parents and a wide range of professionals in relation to education law and related matters.
