We are looking for an ambitious individual to join our college farm in East Yorkshire.

Working across our 360 hectare mixed farm, consisting of suckler cow, sheep, pig and arable enterprises, we are seeking a skilled Shepherd to manage and grow our 300 ewe flock.

Part of Bishop Burton college, the farm is a key to the success of our students.

Students will spend time on the farm as part of their studies, including observing routine farms tasks and performing practical lessons.

Therefore, a suitable aptitude to working with young people is essential.


The primary focus of the role is the day to day management and care of our sheep enterprise, delivering a high standard of stock care and performance.

You will be required to undertake daily stock checks and ensure high standards of animal welfare. You would be responsible for the planning and implementation of routine sheep management practices, such as vaccinations, weighing, etc.

A key responsibility of this role is to record and input data, therefore a knowledge of farm software systems is essential.

This is a very exciting role for someone to establish themselves as a leader in the sheep sector.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB:


Bishop Burton College includes the Riseholme College campus and the post holder may be required to carry out duties at both campuses.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Performing day to day management of the sheep enterprise. (Stock checks, feeding, grazing, etc)
  • To record and report animal performance data using to the farm office.
  • Ability to diagnose, treat and record treatments to sick animals when necessary.
  • Assist, when necessary, on the farms other enterprises as required.
  • Demonstrate an interest in providing the best experience for students and staff, who may have varying level of expertise in agriculture.
  • Help to facilitate excellent educational access (practical's, duties etc.) to the sheep enterprises for students and academic staff.
  • Take part in farm and college open events

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

  • Minimum NVQ Level 3 in Agriculture, or equivalent experience
  • NPTC or equivalent Telehandler certificate
- practical experience working in agriculture

  • Specific knowledge and experience of managing breeding animals (e.g. lambing)
  • Ability to undertake all sheep management practices.
  • Ability to record data relating to animal performance.
  • Able to identify, treat and record treatments for animals in poor health.
  • Willing to work weekends on a rota basis.
  • Help to facilitate groups of students through practical's and farm duties.
  • Ability to deal with unexpected challenges which livestock can throw up along with a calm approach to problem solving.
  • Able to form & maintain appropriate relationships & personal boundaries with young people.
  • A calm demeanour, especially when working around stock.
  • Motivation to work with children and young people.
  • Emotional resilience in working with challenging behaviours and appropriate attitudes to use of authority and maintaining discipline.
  • Fit for the duties of the post.
  • DBS check carried out on appointment.
