This post is a key element in realising our philosophy in terms of raising achievement through the encouragement of a positive attitude towards school.

It requires a flexible approach to pupils, which recognises individual needs.

The School Counsellor will support the work of the pastoral team as well as the work of the wider whole school team.


PARTICULAR DUTIES AND ACTIVITIES:


Supporting pupils by:

  • Undertaking activities with individuals or groups of pupils to ensure their safety and facilitate their physical, emotional and educational development;
  • Working to establish a supportive relationship with children and parents concerned;
  • Encouraging acceptance and inclusion of the child who may have special needs;
  • Promoting and reinforcing the pupils' selfesteem;
  • Use of specialist skills to undertake those activities necessary to meet the physical, emotional and educational needs of individuals and groups of pupils, including those with special needs;
  • Monitoring and analysing lateness to school or truancy from school and/or lessons and liaising with the Educational Welfare Service;
  • Supporting pupils in day to day school matters;
  • Counselling pupils identified through Pupil Support meetings and liaising with outside agencies where necessary.
Supporting the teacher by;

  • Monitoring individual pupils' needs and reporting these to their designated supervisor as appropriate;
  • Keeping such records of pupils' development, academic and pastoral, as are required by the school;
  • Suggesting strategies that teachers may adopt with individual pupils;
  • Undertaking with the teaching staff the smooth transition between educational phases;
  • Monitoring the needs of individual pupils and in conjunction with teaching staff, develop appropriate measures to overcome problems and facilitate physical, emotional and educational developments of individuals and groups of pupils.

Supporting the school by:

  • Being aware of the school's policies and procedures;
  • Leading small groups of staff in developing their own personal responses to individual pupils;
  • Attending professional development opportunities;
  • Acting as a direct home/school link where appropriate;
  • Being aware of confidential issues linked to home/pupil/teacher/school work and keeping confidences as appropriate;
  • Mentoring/supervising pupils;
  • Being involved in extracurricular activities such as planning meetings, out of school hours activities, fund raising etc;
  • Any other curricular duties which may be reasonably regarded as within the nature of duties and responsibilities/level of the post as defined.

General

  • Take responsibility for own professional development/training;
  • Participate in the school's performance management framework;
  • Participate in counselling supervision;
  • Undertake Child Protection training as required;
  • Carry out duties with regard to Equal Opportunities and Racial Equality policies to ensure that students and colleagues are treated in a fair and consistent manner;
  • Support Parents' Evenings, Reward Ceremonies and similar events, as required

ALLOWANCE ATTACHED TO THE POST AND DUTIES:Grade 8


HOURS OF DUTY:37 hours per week, whole time, 195 day contract.


These duties may be varied from time to time to meet the changing demands of the school at the reasonable direction of the Head Teacher commensurate with the grade of the post.

This job description does not form part of the contract of employment. It describes the way the post-holder is expected and required to perform and complete the duties as set out.


Salary:
£23,622.00-£26,669.00 per year


Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Whitley Bay: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
