Description

The successful post holder shall be responsible for the safe and effective running of the orthopaedic, trauma and podiatry service in the operating department.

They will work collaboratively with their team leader colleagues and the other departments to ensure a smooth flow and patient experience through the surgical pathway.


They shall deputise for the matron in their absence and it shall be expected that they have a good understanding of bigger picture thinking to maximise resources.

At Homerton we have a main theatre department containing 6 theatres and a day surgery unit with three theatres.


We have just had approval to begin work on two new operating theatres which will be situated over beside our day surgery unit.


  • To be a highly competent, knowledgeable, and visible practitioner within the specialty ensuring the provision of excellent, evidencebased nursing care for patients.
  • Support effective clinical incidents reporting, lead investigations where required ensuing where any learning is found it is embedded and shared to promote an open culture where the team feel safe to raise concerns.
  • Ensure that staff work in a professional manner and that you foster and enable a kind, transparent workplace where staff are proud to be part of your team.
  • Support and maintain a safe environment by ensuring that equipment is checked, clinical areas are prepared for patients, trust policies are adhered to, faulty equipment is reported.
  • To support appropriate workforce skill mix to provide the highest standard of safe care for patients
  • To act as an advocate for the patient ensuring the provision of appropriate information and support services.
  • To communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers, and other staff, overcoming any barriers to understanding and providing support during distressing or emotional events.
  • Support effective communication to ensure a safe environment for both patients and staff, taking responsibility and escalating any concerns to the relevant lead eg. IPC/Fire/Estates
