Job summary:


As the Governance and Engagement Officer, you will play a key role in supporting the smooth running of our key governance board with senior officials across government as well as stakeholder engagement forums, such as the Best Practice Network, bringing together grants practitioners from government departments, Arms' Length Bodies and Local Authorities.

You will also develop a range of internal and external communication products to keep team members and stakeholders informed and engaged in the Function's priorities and to celebrate successes.

The role is based in our York office.

The Cabinet Office operates a hybrid working policy, with an average of % of working time to be spent in the office.


Job description:


As the Governance and Engagement Officer, you will play a key role in supporting the smooth running of our key governance board and various stakeholder engagement forums to support the delivery of the Function's priorities and commitments.

This includes logístical and secretariat support. The governance board and forums involve senior stakeholders across government and are key touchpoints for the Function. Professionalism is important to ensure the Function is viewed as reliable, credible and approachable in all interactions with stakeholders.


You will also work with the Communication and Engagement Lead to develop internal and external communication products to keep team members and stakeholder informed and engaged in the Function's priorities and to celebrate successes.

This will include updating the Function's digital channels (primarily the Grants Centre of Excellence, LinkedIn and GOV.UK) and monitoring and capturing feedback to continuously improve our communications.


In February 2024 we will hold the first ever Government Grants Management Function conference and awards to recognise the achievements of grants practitioners.

You will support the Communication and Engagement Lead to make this exciting event a reality, as a member of a cross-government Working Group.


  • Providing Secretariat support for the senior governance board and various stakeholder engagement forums, including drafting agendas, booking rooms, issuing meeting invitations, compiling slides and producing high quality notes
  • Drafting communication products to support internal and external engagement activities, conferences and events including on digital channels
  • Maintaining stakeholder contact lists to ensure we are communicating the right messages to the right people at the right time
  • Demonstrating flexibility to work on other activities within the Management Hub team to develop skills and meet business needs.

Person specification:


Essential skills:


  • Able to demonstrate a high level of organisational skills in a fastpaced working environment.
  • Effective prioritisation skills and able to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Experience compiling and formatting documents using MS Word/Google Docs to a high standard.
  • Knowledge of creating, editing and maintaining spreadsheets using MS Excel/ Google Sheets.
  • Knowledge of designing and optimising MS PowerPoint/Google Slides style presentations and slides for information.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Effective stakeholder management demonstrating an ability to engage with senior officials and able to build positive relationships with colleagues across teams.
  • Experience of working on and organising events.
  • Able to work with accuracy and close attention to detail.
  • A team player and willingness to work collaboratively.

Desirable skills:


  • Previous experience in a similar role.
  • Experience of engaging with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Experience of and interest in internal comms issues.
  • Interest in learning new software skills including Adobe Indesign.
