Job summary:

A Consultant Geriatrician is required for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), part of University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.


The Department of Healthcare for Older People provides a comprehensive service for older adults, leading on the care of older adults across both hospital and community settings.


The speciality wishes to recruit additional consultants:
these are a combination of new and replacement posts. We welcome and can accommodate all sub-specialty interests and working less than full time can be accommodated. We provide front door frailty provision and comprehensive geriatric assessment to our local population.

The services offered at QEHB include:

  • Inpatient care on Healthcare for Older People (HCOP) wards.
  • Older People Assessment & Liaison (OPAL) front door frailty
  • Frailty Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC)
  • Perioperative medicine including orthogeriatrics, major trauma service, perioperative care of older people undergoing surgery (POPS) and oncogeriatrics.
  • Subspecialty clinics including movement disorders, frailty, falls and bone health.
  • Academic geriatric medicine with established links to the University of Birmingham.
  • Frailty virtual wards.
  • Community geriatrics including inreach services to the local community hubs.

Main duties, tasks & skills required:

Prerequisite:

  • Must be entered onto the GMC register.
  • Must possess MRCP or equivalent.
  • Must be on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT in Geriatric & Internal Medicine

Key Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Care of patients and administrative duties related to patient care.
  • Contribution to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity.
  • Regular participation in speciality and multidisciplinary meetings.
  • Regular participation in quality improvement, audit, and research.
  • Provision of cover for consultant colleagues periods of leave in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Evening, weekend and bank holiday oncall commitments for specialty and internal medicine.
  • Support of the speciality and wider hospital in emergencies

Indicative job plan*:

  • Training and experience in Geriatric and Internal Medicine in an accredited training programme.

8.0 PA Direct Clinical Care:

  • 7day seniorled patient care
  • Subspecialty work and associated administration
  • Prospective cover for colleagues leave
  • Up to 1PA for acute unselected medical take.

2.0 PA Supporting Professional Activity:

  • CME/ CPD/ appraisal/ revalidation
  • Clinical governance/ Quality improvement
  • Service development
  • Teaching
  • Educational supervision
  • A detailed job plan will be agreed with the post holder on appointment.

Essential:


  • Entered onto the GMC register.
  • Possess MRCP or equivalent.
  • CCT in Geriatric and General Medicine or within 6 months of CCT in Geriatric & General Medicine.
