Core objectives of the Youth Worker


The post holder will:

- contribute to the development of services for children and young people, up to the age of 25, at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital;
- act as an advocate and source of support for young people within the hospital for both patients and young people within the staff group;
- work flexibly to assist with the provision of a varied programme of support with due regard for the needs and opinions of young people;
- participate as a professional member of the Youth Service and contribute to the care and support of young patients and staff within the Trust;
- support ensuring the clinic environment is young people friendly and stimulating;
- ensure staff working within the Trust have the support required by working closed with the Workforce, OD and Education leads.


MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To assess the social, developmental and educational needs of individuals and groups of young people accessing ROH services (both patients and staff) and help deliver appropriate programmes and activities.
  • To establish relationships with key individuals and, as appropriate, parents/carers, siblings, youth workforce and community.
  • To establish and lead the ROH Youth Forum to create opportunities for young people to participate and actively share their views within the Trust.
  • To support the management of the transition of young people between paediatric and adult services and work in partnership with the Transition CNS.
  • To encourage young people to self-advocate or advocate on their behalf; working closely with relevant services such as PALS.
  • To document, report and act on/escalate any concerns relating to needs assessment and child protection or safeguarding issues as appropriate.
  • To support children, young people and families to identify risks/vulnerabilities they may be experiencing, including completing Early Help Assessment plans, referrals to partnership agencies, liaising with internal/external professionals and signposting for support.
  • To offer advice and information to patient and staff relating to social issues such as risk-taking behaviour, signposting, education, finances etc.
  • Enable young people to access appropriate community support services such as health, social, educational or legal services. To establish contact and relationships with groups or organisations to help establish young people in their local communities.
  • Ensure up to date evidence-based practice by close liaison with community youth work teams and maintaining an awareness of the national youth work agenda.
  • To provide tailored support for young people of all ages and their families during their admission to hospital, throughout their stay and discharge planning.
  • To work collaboratively within the ICS and system-wide networks.
  • To maintain confidentiality and have an awareness of how to deal with sensitive or complex information.
  • To utilise interpersonal and communication skills when receiving highly complex or highly emotive information.
  • To have an awareness of basic IT skills and be able to perform the physical skill of using a keyboard.
