We in the M&S Food Buying team do We are food and drink obsessed and spend our days working with the team of category product developer, technologist and supply chain, along with many other partners, to deliver an exciting own-label offering that constantly delights and engages our customers.

You'll know what sells, what is commercial and how to trade and to support in making that happen.


Your role is to help M&S Food drive sales and profit, deliver its strategy and be successful, so we need hard workers and big problem solvers.

We are looking for Food buyers who will continue to drive our market share and who will push the boundaries and celebrate success.


This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a category with ambitious growth plans and be involved in defining both the category and supplier strategy to deliver this.

Key Accountabilities and measures

  • Drive sales and profit in line with operating plan budgets
  • Drive market share performance
  • Lead category buying team in delivery of commercial objectives
  • Lead relationship with suppliers through effective commercial management
  • Prepare and agree category plan with Management Team through analysis of customer insight, sales and trends
  • Set effective range strategies to optimise selling format and product choice, understanding space requirements
  • Set clear range and price architecture
  • Ensure commercial strategy is in line with M&S key values and compliant to legal requirements
  • Set effective promotional and marketing plan in line with Food Group plan
  • Deliver targeted % of newness
  • Drive efficiency improvements with supply base and deliver cost out
  • Compliance with the financial control process for Supplier contributions
Key skills

You'll have a commercial outlook, with the ability to make great decisions and negotiate effectively. Using commercial and customer data you'll seize and deliver commercial opportunities. A strong communicator able to influence at all levels. You'll be comfortable working in a team and building strong relationships in both your internal and external networks.
