For 15 years (and counting), half a million 40-69 year old volunteers have had their health tracked by UK Biobank.

Researchers from around the world can then study the information, which includes genetic sequence data, heart, brain and bone scans, hospital and GP records, blood samples, questionnaires, and activity data.


UK Biobank is a vital scientific not-for-profit organisation, with over 30,000 registered researchers from academia and industry who have published more than 10,000 peer-reviewed papers.

This is only the beginning for UK Biobank and we expect these numbers to grow considerably.


Overview of the role:

This is a brand new role and part of a significant investment in UK Biobank's communications strategy.

We're looking for someone with a good knowledge of health research and great writing skills to join our growing Communications team as our Science Writer.

You'll produce creative content across the spectrum of our communications work for a range of audiences including UK Biobank volunteers, researchers and the general public.


Working hours are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, the role will be based in Cheadle (Stockport) or Oxford with some travel required to each site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Help to tell UK Biobank's stories so that we can engage, inspire and make proud the volunteers, researchers and public who want to know more about our work
  • Translate complex science into engaging accessible prose which is accurate and informative
  • Work in close collaboration with UK Biobank's science team and researchers to create highquality content in a range of formats including: case studies, news and feature articles, web and social media content, video scripts, newsletter content, presentations for senior leaders and corporate reports
  • Update and implement a style guide for the organisation, and edit the work of others as needed, to ensure consistent tone and messaging
  • Manage and keep up a date a library of organisationwide case studies
  • Manage and keep up to date a set of key statistics and facts about UK Biobank to be used across communications materials
  • Contribute to the team's content ideation and planning activity/calendar
  • Contribute to developing and implementing the team's content strategy

About you:


Essential

  • Excellent communications skills, particularly in writing
  • Experience of turning complex science into engaging accessible prose which is accurate and informative
  • Working knowledge of health research and its terminology
  • Ability to come up with imaginative and creative ideas for communicating UK Biobank's work
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Selfstarter with the ability to manage your own workload
  • Comfortable managing multiple projects with tight deadlines
  • Ability to respond flexibly and positively to unexpected changes or demands
  • Excellent people skills to interact with colleagues and UK Biobank researchers

Desirable

  • Science degree or equivalent, or demonstrable interest in and experience of research
  • Experience of working in a science/research organisation
  • Experience of writing for the web
  • Experience of working with web content management systems
