About the role:


  • Great Britain's electricity system is undergoing an ambitious, exciting and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, greener system, one that protects the planet and serves generations to come.
  • The ESG (Environmental, Societal and Governance) Lead will play a key role in advancing our ESG initiatives. This role is pivotal in helping us enhance our ESG efforts, aligning them with sustainability goals and best practices, and ensuring we make informed decisions for the pursuit of responsible business practices.
  • In this position, you will collaborate closely with the teams across our business to gather and coordinate the data required for environmental reporting. This role will extend to building and developing the process, improving the implementation, monitoring and reporting of our ESG initiatives.
  • This role is based from Warwick, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home.

About us:


  • At National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO), we're aiming to operate a zerocarbon electricity system for Great Britain by 2025. This means using wind, solar and hydropower without relying on any carbonbased generators to balance the grid.
    Becoming the Energy Future System Operator

As you may have seen the Government and Ofgem have asked the ESO to take on new roles and responsibilities- Becoming the Energy Future System Operator is a critical step to help deliver a reliable and clean energy transition for all.

The ESO, including all of its existing roles, will be at the heart of the new Future System Operator, taking on additional roles with a whole energy system mindset to drive progress towards net zero while maintaining energy security and minimising costs for consumers.- The new organisation will be set up as a public corporation with operational independence from government - bringing parties together to support optimised decision making and action.

As now, it will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements.

It is anticipated that the new organisation will be up and running by or in The time to act on climate change is now.

Key accountabilities:


  • With direction from the Senior Internal Communications & Corporate Responsibility Manager, support the delivery of environmental reporting for the ESO, including the collection and analysis of data on the company's environmental performance.
  • Taking the lead in collecting and analysing ESG data, producing concise and informative reports and proposals, suitable for internal and external sharing.
  • Staying updated on simplified ESG reporting frameworks and standards, suitable for our business and in line with best practice.
  • Keeping up to date with changes in environmental reporting requirements, ensuring that any changes are incorporated into the ESO's approach.
  • Taking the lead in improving our ESG reporting by designing and implementing pragmatic sustainability initiatives tailored to our business, considering resource efficiency, waste reduction, and localised environmental impacts.
  • Developing communication materials to provide updates on the company's environmental performance to internal and external stakeholders, employees, and the general public.
  • Working with the Colleague Communications and Engagement team to develop communications/ campaigns that build awareness and foster the move towards a more sustainabilityminded culture.
  • Supporting the Colleague Communications and Engagement team in involving colleagues in sustainable initiatives and volunteering.
  • Supporting with the delivery of projects and adhoc requests, as required by the Corporate Affairs leadership team from time to time.

About you:

In this case, we're looking for someone who has:

  • Degree level/relevant professional qualification.
  • 3 years of experience in ESG reporting, sustainability, corporate social responsibility, or similar roles.
  • Familiarity with ESG principles and their applicability to small and mediumsized enterprises.
  • Ability to analyse data, draw insights and prepare proposals that inform decisionmaking.
  • Strong communication skills to engage stakeholders and convey ESG efforts effectively.
  • Project management abilities to execute ESG projects.
  • Familiarity with relevant regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Collaboration skills to work across departments and drive ESG improvements.

What you'll get:


  • A competitive salary between £45,000 £50,000pa dependent on capability.
