Main Purpose


We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join a premier team of Firefighters at 421 Air Base Squadron, Royal Air Force Menwith Hill, United Kingdom.


The primary purpose of this position is to serve as Training Captain responsible for developing and conducting the fire, rescue, hazardous materials and EMS training program.

The incumbent will develop and manage plans, program and train department personnel and the installation population in appropriate techniques and methods.

Will develop, implement, review, and evaluate the comprehensive fire prevention training, safety, and hazardous material handling programs at the installation.

Instructs department personnel in all phases of fire protection, hazardous materials response, technical rescue, fire prevention, emergency medical, and disaster preparedness techniques.

Will also respond to, evaluate, and recommend corrective action for deficiencies in procedures, strategy or techniques noted during emergencies.

Serves as member of a firefighting team, assuming full range of firefighting duties at all types of emergency incidents; assumes immediate control until relieved by a Senior Fire Officer.

Knowledge and Experience Required:


  • Applicants must demonstrate the following: _
  • Knowledge of the principles, concepts, methodology, and recognized standards covering fire protection and prevention techniques and procedures; agency and installation manuals, rules, and regulations; and federal, state, and local fire protection/prevention ordinances and building codes.
  • Knowledge and experience in the command of fire, explosion, entrapment, hazardous material, emergency medical and natural disaster response tactics, procedures, identification, and mitigation actions, to include, techniques, practices and operation of fire department equipment used for communication, firefighting, rescue and HAZMAT Operations.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of fire protection and prevention proficiency training.
  • Ability to prepare and present appropriate fire protection/prevention material for training purposes and produce presentations, graphs and/or reports to support training programs.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct functions and to mentor, motivate, and appraise the staff of an organization and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to direct others under stressful and dangerous operating conditions and to formulate and effectively implement firefighting/emergency response plans.

  • Hours of work: Start & end times may be modified due to mission needs and in accordance with organization's flexible working policies.
  • Will be required to handle and safeguard sensitive information in accordance with applicable US and UK laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Must obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.
  • May be assigned other duties that are appropriate to the grade and skill set of the employee.
  • May be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft in the performance of official duties or attend necessary training. Position may be coded as mission essential.
  • A 12month probationary period will be required.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • May be required to travel overnight to US or other countries in the performance of official duties or attend necessary training.

Other significant facts pertaining to this position are:

  • Employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Overtime and/or emergency overtime may be required but cannot be guaranteed and should not be expected.
  • This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program. Duties may require wear of firefighting personal protective equipment with Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and entering environments designated as immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH).
The incumbent of this position must be certified by the DoD Firefighter Certification system as:

  • Fire Officer II (includes Fire Officer I),
  • Fire Instructor II (includes Fire Instructor I),
  • Fire Inspector II (includes Fire Inspector I),
  • HAZMAT Incident Commander (includes Hazmat Awareness, Hazmat Operations, and Hazmat Technician),
