About the Group


The Economics Group in the Treasury provide Ministers with analysis and assessment of fast-paced economic developments in the UK economy and advises on their implications for the Government's economic strategy.

It works with policy teams to factor economic analysis into advice for Ministers on a wide range of polices.

And the Group is a leading member of the UK macroeconomic community, collaborating with the Bank, OBR and academia on shared topics of interest, liaising with international organisations in their surveillance of the UK economy and supporting the economic and social research professions across government departments.


About the Team


The Macroeconomic Assessment team is at the core of the Treasury's function as an economics Ministry, providing economic analysis, briefing and policy advice on the issues facing the UK economy.
As a team, we play a central role in analysing developments in the economy and risks to the outlook.

We seek to produce high quality and influential analysis working with colleagues across the department.

We work flexibly across branches, and the post-holder will need to be willing to work across priorities.

Key Accountabilities
This is an exciting opportunity to take on a high-profile leadership role in the Economics group.


Model Unit sits within the Macroeconomic Assessment team in the Economics Group and is a diverse, high-performing branch of six analysts.

The goal of the Unit is to produce and coordinate impactful economic analysis to influence policy development across HMT and the OBR's forecasts.

The Unit manages the relationship with the OBR economy team, leads on briefing of the economy forecast within the department, and manages the process by which the economic effects of government policy are analysed - making this branch one of the few in HMT to have influence over all major measures being considered for fiscal events.

Outside of fiscal events the Unit is responsible for developing the suite of economic models used by the Group, carrying out bespoke pieces of economic modelling, and ensuring that HMT is meeting its obligation to maintain and develop the HMT-OBR Macroeconomic Model.


Key Accountabilities for this role include:

  • Lead the Model Unit branch and part of senior management for the team
  • the post holder will have management responsibilities for the branch which is split across the London and Darlington offices currently. They will also be encouraged to play an active part in the management and leadership of the wider Macroeconomic Assessment team and support corporate priorities across the Economics Group.
  • Provide leadership in the department's interactions with the OBR's Economy Team. This includes working with the OBR's Economy Team to understand their forecast and presenting the department's assessment of the economic impact of policies to the OBR.
  • Manage the process for analysing the indirect economic effects of government policies in the run up to fiscal events. The Unit, working with analysts and policy colleagues across the department, is responsible for ensuring that the economic analysis is robust and that ministers can take dec
