An exciting opportunity has arisen to lead and develop the psychological provision to the Psychiatric Liaison team at Whipps Cross hospital in Waltham Forest.

This post represents additional funding recently awarded NEL Integrated Care Board and speaks to an increased recognition of the importance of psychological input for those in crisis.


The post holder would join a well-established and well respected multidisciplinary team working with those presenting to A&E or referred by Whipps Cross clinical teams.

The post holder will join a psychological professional working in the service with clients presenting with mental health difficulties related to physical health presentations.

The service also receive support from our Trust wide DBT service for clients presenting with self harm.

We are looking for a senior, experienced psychologist to support and develop pathways in the service, contribute a psychological perspective to the care for clients under the team.


The post will involve working with service-users and their families at a point of crisis to prevent admission to hospital.

Service-users would present with a range of difficulties including psychosis, complex depression, personality disorder and suicidality.


This post would suit someone with a strong interest in multidisciplinary working, working with service-users who present with complexity and significant levels of risk, working with the wider systems including family and carers.

Probationary Period

Starting with NELFT
NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust.

All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment.

As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop in sessions focusing in engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes.

The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

High Cost Area Supplement - London

This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (minimum payment of £4,108 and a maximum payment of £5,177 per annum pro rata).

NELFT has a thriving Research and Development department that supports a range of national and local studies. We have excellent links with UCL via a number of clinical academic posts and teaching links.

We endeavour to support staff with research and quality improvement projects and to lead services which are research aware and research active.


  • Leading a high quality psychology service to Psych liaison service at Whipps Cross hospital, in line with Psychiatric Liaison Accreditation Network (PLAN) and CORE 24 guidelines, under the guidance of the Strategic Lead.
  • Providing operational management and high quality clinical supervision to psychologists in Psychiatric Liaison, under the guidance of the Strategic Lead.
  • To provide specialist consultation, assessment and formulation around priority cases identified by psychiatric team colleagues.
  • Working in close collaboration with the community and mental health inpatient and crisis psychology services to ensure a smooth pathway for serviceusers and their families.


As a service, we recognise the importance of valuable supervision and CPD and you will be well supported by an experienced and supportive team with good access to CPD opportunities.

You will receive clinical and professional supervision from the Psychology team based in Goodmayes hospital.

This is a well-established and well respected team of psychologists working with those in crisis - either on the inpatient wards or within the CRHTTs.

The team includes approximately ten qualified psychologists, many of whom are actively engaged in developing national best practice guidelines, are involved in research and teach on local clinical and counselling psychology doctoral courses.
