Responsibilities section:

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties: To take responsibility for the routine surveillance of RSV and influenza viruses section of the RVU according to relative priorities set by the unit technical manager and scientific leads To appraise and develop the service of the laboratory so that service delivery is safe, effective and economical and follows best practice.

Validating results via LIMS as appropriate.

To ensure important or unusual results are drawn to the attention of senior staff and/or medical staff, and to report complaints and anomalies as soon as possible.

Interpretation and reporting of results issued from the Respiratory Virus Unit.


To be responsible for LIMS housekeeping activities to ensure all tests are completed within turnaround times Play a leading role in the assessment of new technologies and diagnostic tests to enhance the laboratories capabilities and ensure that the high scientific standards are followed.

Work with Assay Performance & Compliance Unit (APCU) in the development and approval of new laboratory assays to comply with regulatory and MHRA guidelines, and existing or new guidelines from UKAS.

Maintain awareness of relevant IVD standards (e.g. standard operating procedures, UK Standards for Microbiology Investigations).

To ensure compliance with UKAS and other accreditation standards. To adhere to laboratory SOPs and the laboratory policies and procedures and to work autonomously within the guidelines provided. Also, to assist the Technical Manager and other senior staff in the preparation and ongoing reviews of SOPs.

To demonstrate a good understanding of clinical virology, and to maintain scientific and specialist knowledge commensurate with an experienced Clinical Scientist.

The level of security needed is Basic Personnel Security Standard. People working with government assets must complete Basic Personnel Security Standard checks.

For posts on UKHSA Civil Service terms and conditions, new entrants to the Civil Service are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band.

For existing Civil Servants and roles advertised across government, the rules of transfer apply, i.e., level transfers move on current salary or the pay range minimum, transfers on promotion move to new pay range minimum or receive a 10% increase.
