Learning Resources Assistant Apprentice
SBU/Department: Library and Computing Services
FTE: 1 fte (37 hours per week)
Duration of Contract: Permanent
Salary/Grade: Starting salary £21,828 UH3 increasing to a UH4 on successful completion of the first apprenticeship then increasing to a UH6 on successful completion of the second apprenticeship


Annual Leave:

25 days plus standard public holidays and an additional 4 days including the closure of our office between Christmas and New Year
Location: College Lane and de Havilland campuses, Hatfield- This is an exciting 4-year developmental opportunity to join a team working in our busy University Learning Resource Centres (LRC's) supporting students and staff.

We work with the entire university community and look to continuously improve and innovate, develop existing and new systems to enable us to take advantage of emerging technologies to further the University's overall strategic aims and objectives.

As an apprentice, you will get to visit and work with the different teams in the Academic Resources Section of Library and Computing Services at both of our state-of-the-art LRC's.


Main duties & responsibilities

  • You will be working as a member of the team, assisting the development and delivery of an excellent library and information service to onsite and online users to support the development of learning and research communities, ensuring both internal and external customer enquiries are dealt with promptly and answered using the relevant systems following processes to log, resolve and refer enquiries within agreed timescales and standards. You will assist users to develop confidence and skills in accessing and using learning resources effectively including the academic skills of reading, researching, understanding, and evaluating information. You will deliver LRC tours and welcome meet and greet at start of term and on university Open Days, as well as taking ownership of allocated tasks and using judgement and initiative in finding the most effective solution, using a broad range of skills and knowledge of University and LCS policies & procedures.
    Skill and experience required
  • A keen interest in a career in library and information services, as well as practical IT skills with programs such as Microsoft Office are essential. You will be skilled in problem solving and have the ability to cope with physical demands of work, including moving equipment or visits across campus. You will be able to work as a part of a team, and have a keen attention to detail. Good written and oral communications skills are essential, and experience of providing a service to customers is preferred.
    Qualifications required.
  • GCSE Maths & English C/4+ and above or equivalent.
    What kind of training will you receive?
  • In order to meet the eligibility criteria, the apprentice should not previously have undertaken any training which would duplicate the training or assessment they will receive under this apprenticeship.
    The University is required to meet UKVI visa regulations and we are not able to sponsor for this position. Applicants who do not currently have the right to work in the UK will have to satisfy UKVI regulations before they can be appointed. You must have been a UK/EEA resident for the last 3 years.
