KEEPING BRITAIN TRADING

At ABP, our Marine Pilots guide vessels safely from sea to berth or vice versa within the port's jurisdiction.

The Marine Pilot apprenticeship scheme is crafted for individuals who have already received extensive training at sea and hold an Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency.

As a Marine Pilot Apprentice, you will collaborate closely with the captain and other crew members, potentially from diverse backgrounds around the world.

You will master the usage of the vessel's navigational and communications equipment, interacting with other vessels and the harbor marine control center.

Prior to boarding a vessel, a Marine Pilot must prepare a passage plan for the journey from sea to berth or vice versa.

This involves considering the vessel's specifications, drafts, operating characteristics, as well as factors such as tides, weather conditions, and the marine environment, assessing the necessity for tug assistance during maneuvers.

To excel as a Marine Pilot, you need to thrive under pressure to make sound decisions, along with the ability to handle emergency situations effectively.

You must be well-versed in safe navigational practices, vessel handling, and environmental protocols, complying with international regulations while prioritizing safety for yourself, the vessel, its crew, and the marine surroundings.

A Marine Pilot should be capable of ascending/descending a vertical rope ladder from/to a launch position beside a moving vessel, often in challenging weather conditions.

You will operate in shifts and adhere to regulated rest periods. This apprenticeship entails intensive training, typically spanning up to 3 years, depending on prior experience.
