Housing Benefit Assessor
Akton Recruitment has an opening for a Housing Benefit Assessor
The job description refers to the principal duties and responsibilities of the
Post. It does not necessarily list in detail all the tasks required to carry out
these duties and responsibilities.

  • Process all types of claims for Housing and Council Tax Benefit/Support
including self employed earners, persons from abroad and students for for
rent allowances, rent rebate and council tax reduction claims.

  • Deal with changes in circumstances for all types of claims and other items
which require action in relation to benefit claims;

  • Deal with more complex correspondence and enquiries as assigned by
management;

  • Verify claims in accordance with the standard required by the Verification
Framework and requesting further information where appropriate;

  • Ensure overpayments are correctly classified for recovery purposes and
that action is taken to recover from ongoing benefit where appropriate;

  • Make decisions on requests for backdating benefit;
  • Keep up to date with current Housing and Council Tax Reduction
Regulations and best practice;

  • Deal with customers enquiries by telephone, correspondence, or in person
and conducting interviews;

  • Identify and report possible fraudulent claims to the Single Fraud
Investigation Team;

  • Process claims for Free School Meals and Pupil Development Grants.
  • Give advice to customers on entitlement to other welfare benefits;
  • Achieve individual performance targets established by management;
  • Liaise with other Council Departments, other agencies and other persons
affected to ensure our customers receive correct information and advice
about their benefit entitlement and that a customer focused service is
provided;

  • Resolve issues with payments including cancelled and returned cheques;
  • Contribute to the achievement of service objectives and performance
targets set out in the Divisions Service and Organisational Development
Plan and Business Improvement Plan;

  • Contribute to the development and achievement of the Authority's goals
and targets;

  • Comply with the requirements of any quality standard that may be
introduced;

  • Maintain the confidentiality of personal data in accordance with Data
Protection Act 1998;

  • Operate systems through a personal computer;
  • Ensure compliance with the Council's Financial and Contract Procedure
Rules; Policies and Procedures

  • Implement the principles of the Council's Equal Opportunities Policy while
carrying out the above duties;

  • To adhere to Health and Safety Legislation/relevant Council Policies and
Procedures and to take reasonable care for the health and safety of
yourself and other persons who may be adversely affected by your
acts/omissions.

  • To implement the principles of the Council's Environment Policy while
carrying out the above duties.
