As part of this investment we are looking to recruit
a Health, Safety, Security and Environment Auditor (HSSE) on a full time, permanent basis, based in Birmingham.



Job Purpose


To establish and maintain a companywide annual Safety, Security & Environment Audit Plan for West Midlands Trains (WMT) and provide comprehensive internal safety, operations, security and environment audit service to ensure continual improvement in our Safety, Security and Environmental Performance.


The role will be responsible for developing, implementing and undertaking a companywide safety, security & environment audit plan in conjunction with Operations, Engineering, Security & Environment and any other relevant Functions based on the company risk profile, to provide assurance to the business that procedures are being followed and that risk exposure is being managed across the business to ALARP.


Key Responsibilities

  • Working with key internal stakeholders such as Occupational Safety, Operational Safety, Engineering, Property, Security and Environment develop and implement the annual Safety, Security and Environment Audit Plan based on the WMT safety risk profile, safety risk maturity levels, safety, security & environmental performance data and the Safety Certificate.
  • Develop the Annual Safety, Security & Environment Audit Plan to include the auditing of suppliers on their management of safety including areas such as competency and Fatigue Management.
  • Carry out internal occupational and operational safety, security and environment audits at Stations and Depots across the network.
  • Produce timely audit reports following the completion of internal audits, identifying, agreeing and communicating corrective actions with Function and other relevant Local Managers.
  • In conjunction with the Head of Occupational Safety and the SMS Manager write, develop and review safety management procedures to ensure they remain uptodate with safety legislation, industry standards and good practice. Ensuring Function Managers understand their specific responsibilities.
  • Ensure safety, security & environment initiatives are developed and procedures are reviewed as a consequence of audit reviews and findings.
  • Track the progress of the Safety, Security & Environment Audit Plan through to completion providing updates to the Head of Occupational Safety and SEMG. Undertake spot check audits on the annual Safety, Security & Environment Audit Plan ensuring actions are being progressed as required.
  • Work in conjunction with the Head of Occupational Safety and SMS Manager to ensure the WMT Railway Safety Certificate and Authorisation is maintained and kept up to date under the Railways and Other Guided Transport Systems Regulations 200

Required Knowledge and Experience

  • NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent
  • Comprehensive knowledge of UK/EU Safety Legislation
  • Knowledge of standards such as ISO's / OHSAS
  • Thorough knowledge of operational and occupational health and safety, security, environment and rail industry requirements desirable
  • Experience of working in a highly regulated environment
  • Effective communicator at all levels of the organisation; stakeholder management
  • Highly developed organisational skills and selfstarter.
  • Excellent analytical skills with a high level of attention to detail
  • Strong problemsolving skills
  • Ability to project manage tasks from inception to completion
  • Excellent teamworking, and the ability to contribute towards a positive team dynamic
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate at all levels.
  • The ability to work under pressure
  • Knowledge of the business environment in which West Midlands Trains operates desirable
