We are looking to appoint an experienced, dynamic individual from either a nursing or Biomedical Scientist background to join our existing Transfusion Practitioner team and take an active part in ensuring Blood Transfusion in Cornwall is safe, appropriate and compliant with all relevant standards and regulations.

You will possess sound theoretical and practical blood transfusion experience. You will be a flexible, confident individual who can demonstrate excellent communication, teaching & interpersonal skills. You will be expected to liaise with all levels of staff involved in the transfusion process. The ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team is essential.


Main duties include:

To actively participate in haemovigilance for the Trust.

To promote total patient blood management through education, training and audit in clinical transfusion practice

To act as an interface between the Blood Transfusion Department and its clinical users

To enable the Trust to achieve compliance with the Blood Safety and Quality regulations

To develop, administrate and deliver a regular and rolling programme of education in clinical aspects of blood transfusion to Medical, Nursing and Ancillary staff as appropriate and to maintain adequate records of staff trained

To plan, implement and evaluate clinical audit/effectiveness projects, in relation to the safety of blood transfusion

To liaise with the Blood Transfusion Department and clinicians in order to implement, monitor and evaluate the effect of policy changes

To participate in the writing/dissemination/audit and review of transfusion policies, local guidelines and procedures

Respond to urgent clinical events and provide educational support

Support laboratory staff with specific training and simulations

To continuously assess and monitor risk in transfusion practice

Involved in planning and implementing new systems across the Acute Trust and Community Organisations


To develop effective relationships with specialist client groups such as the Jehovah's Witnesses Hospital Liaison Committee to raise staff awareness about their special needs as regard to transfusion practice.

To actively promote, in collaboration with the midwifery department the Trust's prophylactic anti-D programme (including cffDNA testing)

To monitor and where necessary report inappropriate clinical transfusion and advise accordingly in promoting effective use of blood

To recommend alternatives where appropriate


To investigate serious transfusion associated incidents, errors and near misses and report in line with clinical risk, BSQR requirements and Serious Hazards of Transfusion (SHOT).

To formulate with manager's action plans to resolve problems found.

To maintain registration with HCPC/NMC as appropriate

To develop evidence-based protocols and guidelines covering all aspects of transfusion of blood and blood products and components, and ensure these guidelines are disseminated and implemented across the Trust

To support delivery and development of the mandatory programme of education in transfusion matters for all relevant staff, including doctors, nurses, midwives, healthcare assistants, phlebotomists, and theatre staff

To ensure appropriate knowledge base in handling transfusion equipment such as blood warmers and rapid infusers

To ensure the availability of relevant information to patients, relatives and carers regarding options and choices in transfusion practices

To regularly review transfusion practices across the Trust and update when required

To keep accurate record of mandatory transfusion training attendance for the Blood Quality & Safety directives inspections and Trust governance records

Liaise effectively with colleagues to continually improve the quality of service provided

Call IT support and/or direct with service provider to resolve any computer related problems

Reporting incidents and near misses to appropriate internal / external bodies and organisations


Able to design, implement and deliver suitable training plans for practical training sessions on equipment to multi-disciplinary staff at all levels of seniority, who may have little technical knowledge or practical experience.

Liaise with the service users staff to continually improve the quality of service provided

Liaise with the senior nurse and governance forum to improve practice and regulatory compliance, deputising for the lead TP

Reporting incidents and near misses to appropriate internal / external bodies and organisations

Attend MDTs where appropriate

To maintain and troubleshoot the Trust's electronic tracking system

Prepare and present tutorials and reports, including to laboratory staff
